📰 Yesterday’s News (Tuesday, Oct. 6)

💵 Check Your Bank Account Thursday: A One-Time $90 Medicare Payment Is on the Way

On Oct. 3, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a one-time $90 “Premium Rebate” to help cover the October Part B premium. Yesterday, news outlets reported some people already seeing deposits. According to CMS, here’s how it works:
- Who gets it: About 20.8 million people with Original Medicare Part B who live in the U.S. You won’t get it if you’re on a Medicare Advantage plan, get help from Medicaid paying your premium, or pay the higher-income surcharge (called IRMAA).
- When: Most people get a direct deposit from Social Security on or around Oct. 8. People without direct deposit get a paper Treasury check later in October. It’s marked “Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium.”
- What you need to do: Nothing. It’s automatic. A letter or email about it follows in mid-October.
- Questions: To check whether you qualify, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). To check on a payment, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, starting Oct. 15.
What it means for you: If a surprise $90 shows up in your account this week, it’s most likely real, so there’s no need to worry. If you’re on a Medicare Advantage plan and don’t see it, nothing is wrong with your account, because those plans aren’t included. Jot “$90, Oct. 8” on the calendar so it doesn’t catch you off guard.

🚨 The Scammers Read the News Too: Nobody Has to “Unlock” Your $90

Any time money is in the news, the crooks start dialing. Consumer and Medicare sites are warning about calls, texts and emails that ask you to “claim,” “verify” or “release” the $90. CMS says the payment is automatic, and nobody needs your bank information, Medicare number, a fee or a gift card to send it.
What it means for you: It’s like a stranger at the door saying he needs your house key to drop off a package. A real delivery doesn’t need your key. If someone calls about your $90, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE yourself, using the number on your Medicare card. Then tell a friend at church or the Senior Center, because a warning passed along is the best protection there is.

🔥 Before You Fire Up the Heater: Tips From the Southend Fire Chief

The Dunlap-Tribune reported yesterday that Southend Volunteer Fire Department crews put out a camper fire on old State Highway 28 on Sept. 29. Chief Ken Herron used it as a reminder for the season ahead. His tips: use heaters the way the maker says and keep them clear of anything that can burn, don’t overload outlets, check your smoke alarms, and make sure everyone knows how to get out.
What it means for you: Cold mornings are coming, and space heaters are the usual suspect in winter house fires. Press the test button on your smoke alarm today. If you can’t reach it, ask a grandchild or neighbor to do it for you. And keep the heater 3 feet from the recliner, the curtains and the dog bed.

🎶 Rain Couldn’t Stop the Music: Small Town America and Oktoberfest Wrap Up

The Tribune also reported that last weekend’s Small Town America festival and Oktoberfest at Harris Park went on in the rain, with polka from the Happiness Band, Exile, Cody McCarver and a Sunday gospel set from Jason Crabb. Organizers thanked the many volunteers who made it happen.
What it means for you: If you missed it, there’s always next year. If you volunteered, thank you. The paper also says the Coke Ovens Museum has finished a weather shelter for its bluegrass performance hall, so rain should spoil fewer concerts there too.
