Or: Arrive Early for the Parade, Bring a Jacket for Saturday Night, and Skip the Burn Pile Today

By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Friday, October 16, 2026

Good morning, neighbor. Pour the coffee and pull a light jacket toward the door. Homecoming is today. The parade is listed for 9:30 a.m., the Indians host Community at 7 p.m., and by suppertime the wind will be turning cooler.

Yesterday was the last hot day. Today the cold front arrives. The National Weather Service has Dunlap near 80 this afternoon, then Friday-night gusts near 30 and a Saturday-night low near 38. Tomorrow and Sunday, downtown fills with free antique tractors at Days of Yesteryear.

City Hall met Thursday evening on the Main Street rezoning and a sludge proposal. As of this morning, the outcome is not posted yet on the city website. Call City Hall if you need the vote. Medicare Open Enrollment and burn permits are still on β€” short reminders below.

⏱️ What this means for you in 30 seconds

  2. Saturday night near 38: Cover tender plants, test the furnace, and bring a warm coat to the tractor show early.
  3. Burning today? Don’t. Gusts near 30 Friday night. Get a free same-day permit when the wind settles β€” BurnSafeTN.org or 1-877-350-2876.

🏈 Homecoming Is Today β€” Parade Morning and a 7 p.m. Kickoff

Sequatchie County High School wraps Homecoming Week today. Dunlap.Today’s homecoming article and the library’s weekly post list the parade at 9:30 a.m. The library’s online calendar still shows 9 a.m. Being curbside by about 9 covers both β€” and organizers already suggest arriving early for a good spot and parking.

The Indians (4-3 overall, 2-1 in conference) host the Community Vikings at 7 p.m. at Indians Stadium. Preschool Page Turners is canceled at the library because of the parade, but the library at 227 Cherry Street stays open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. β€” handy for a restroom stop. Chair Dancing for adults is still on at 1 p.m.

If you need firm drop-off or route details, call the district office at 423-949-3617.

What it means for you: Think of it like a church supper on Main Street β€” dress warm enough for a breeze, claim a curb early, and wave at the kids you know. The rest of the day can wait until the last float passes.

🌑️ The Cold Front Is Here β€” Gusty Friday, Near-Frost Saturday Night

Illustration for 🌡️ The Cold Front Is Here β€” Gusty Friday, Near-Frost Saturday Night

The National Weather Service forecast for Dunlap, last updated about 1:26 a.m. Central today:

  • Today (Fri.): Increasing clouds, high near 80. South wind becoming north; afternoon gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Tonight: Mostly cloudy, low around 45. North wind with gusts as high as 30 mph.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high near 60. North wind gusts as high as 25 mph.
  • Saturday night: Mostly clear, low around 38. Northeast wind gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Sunday: Sunny, high near 66. Sunday night low around 39.
  • Mon.–Thu.: Sunny and milder, highs near 69, 74, 76 and 77.

The Weather Service office in Morristown says the front arrives this afternoon, with gusts up to 30 mph possible at times Friday afternoon and evening. This weekend looks dry and much cooler. Frost is likely Saturday and Sunday nights mainly on the Plateau, in Southwest Virginia, and in the higher mountains. Here in the Valley, cold air settles in hollows and creek bottoms on clear nights, so low spots could see patchy frost even if town stays a few degrees above freezing.

Dunlap.Today noted Thursday’s heat giving way to a roughly 40-degree temperature plunge into the weekend β€” from near 90 yesterday to the upper 30s Saturday night in spots like Dunlap.

What it means for you: Tie down porch cushions before the afternoon wind. Saturday afternoon, bring in tender pots, cover the garden, and make sure the furnace comes on. Pack the warm coat for anyone heading to the tractor show at open.
