⚠️ Text Message Scam Targets Local Residents Posing as Church Leadership

A new scam circulating through text messages is impersonating local church leaders and requesting urgent purchases of gift cards. The scheme has prompted law enforcement to alert residents across the region to verify requests before responding.

📱 How the Scam Works

Scammers are sending text messages that appear to come from local church leadership, creating a false sense of urgency and trust. The messages request that recipients purchase green dot cards-prepaid debit cards commonly sold at retail locations. Because the texts may seem convincing and come during times when people are busy or distracted, residents are urged to pause and verify any such requests through official channels before taking action. ⚠️

🛡️ What You Should Know

Legitimate church leaders and organizations do not request gift cards or prepaid debit cards via unsolicited text messages. If you receive a message claiming to be from church leadership asking for immediate card purchases, it is not a legitimate request. When in doubt, contact the church directly using a phone number you know is correct-not one provided in the suspicious message.

One community member reported receiving a similar message and was able to identify it as a scam by doing additional checking. Staying alert and verifying unusual requests can protect you and your loved ones from financial loss. 💡

📞 Report the Scam

If you or someone you know has fallen victim to this scam or received a suspicious message, contact the Dunlap Police Department at (423) 949-3319. For non-emergency reports, you can also call the E911 dispatch center at (423) 949-9912. Reporting these incidents helps law enforcement track patterns and protect other residents in the community. 📍
