By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Wednesday, October 14, 2026
For parents of Gen Alpha kids in the Sequatchie Valley β babies through about age 12 β this is the week the shorts finally go back in the drawer. Thursday is the last hot one. After that, the National Weather Service has a gusty Friday, a cool Saturday, and a clear Saturday night near 39.
Here’s the Kid-Friendly Events skim. Friday is parade morning for the littles. Saturday is a pick-one day: free tractors and kid vendors in the morning, Fredonia or Pikeville pumpkins in the afternoon, and β new on our list β a free Halloween Spooktacular with hayride trick-or-treating at Fall Creek Falls for an evening in real coats. Sunday brings a red panda party at the Chattanooga Zoo. Monday’s library magic is still on, and Wednesday, Oct. 21, now lands inside our window with Storytime with the Friends at the Fair Building.

π₯ Friday: Parade Morning, Then a Windy Cool-Down

The homecoming parade rolls Friday morning, Oct. 16. The library’s online calendar lists 9 a.m., and its weekly post says 9:30 a.m. β so plan to be on the curb by about 9. There’s no Preschool Page Turners Friday because of the parade, but the library at 227 Cherry Street stays open (8 a.m.β5 p.m.), which is handy for a restroom stop with a stroller. The rest of homecoming week lives in our Valley GenAlpha 2/5: School News & Calendar skim.
The weather turns Friday. NWS (latest update 5:56 p.m. Wednesday) has Dunlap sunny and near 81, with a west wind and gusts as high as 30 mph. Friday night drops to about 45, still gusty.
Two small Friday treats, if you want them: A Nothing Bundt Cakes truck parks at Firefly on Rankin, 11 a.m.β5 p.m. (pre-order at 423-825-9860; prices weren’t listed). And Udder Yum Ice Cream Shoppe (16696 Rankin Ave., 423-949-4232) is running a limited-time deal: buy a family pack and get a free pint.
What it means for you: Sunscreen and a water bottle for the parade, a small bag for candy, and hold onto little hats β 30 mph gusts grab them. Lay out jackets Friday night; Saturday morning starts in the 40s.

π Saturday, Oct. 17: Pick One Morning, One Afternoon, One Evening

Saturday has more good kid stuff than any family can do, so here it is as a menu. NWS says mostly sunny, high near 61, a north breeze with gusts to 25, then a clear night near 39.
Morning β pick one:
- Days of Yesteryear (still on): antique tractors, heritage demos and kids’ events at Coops Creek Commons, 287 Pine Street, Dunlap. 8 a.m.β4 p.m., free admission and parking.
- Dunlap Farmers Market + Young Entrepreneurs Day (still on): 9 a.m.β1 p.m. at Harris Park’s Jeff Johnson Pavilion, 245 Cedar Street, with kids selling things they made or grew. Bring small bills.
- New option over the mountain: Mooneyham Church of God Fall Festival, 2435 Mooneyham Lonewood Rd., Spencer β 10 a.m.β1 p.m., free, with a bounce house, petting zoo, crafts, carnival games, a hayride and snacks. Spencer is on our (Central) time.
Afternoon β pick one:
- Fredonia Mountain Community Homecoming, 1β5 p.m., 5242 Fredonia Road: old-fashioned games, crafts, fire trucks, cake and ice cream. Admission isn’t listed β call ahead if cost matters.
- Free pumpkin carving, 2 p.m., Mountain Glen RV Park & Campground in Pikeville. Pumpkins and supplies are provided, with prizes for coolest, silliest or spookiest. Questions: (423) 225-2566.
Evening β pick one (coats on):
- NEW: Halloween Spooktacular at Fall Creek Falls State Park, 5β9 p.m. Tennessee State Parks says it’s for “children of all ages”: hayrides through the campground for trick-or-treating, a campsite decorating contest, then games and a bonfire at Campground A. Meet at the Visitors Center parking lot. It’s free (donations welcome). One catch: the main park road closes at 4:30, so arrive before then. Questions: 423-881-5708.
- Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Fall Festival, 215 Mt. Calvary Rd., Whitwell, starting 5 p.m.: hayride, children’s games, cake walk and chili. Questions: (423) 800-1861.
Also on the table (Eastern time β subtract an hour): Dayton’s first Tales Among the Oaks storytelling festival (more below); Boo in the Zoo in Chattanooga, Fri. and Sat. 4β8 p.m. Eastern (3β7 p.m. our time), online tickets $17.95 for kids 3β12 and $20.95 for adults; and for crafty older elementary kids, ChattLab’s free Repair CafΓ© at 100 Cherokee Blvd. on the North Shore, 10 a.m.β2 p.m. our time β bring a broken toy, lamp or headphones and watch volunteers try to fix it.
What it means for you: With littles, one block plus a nap is a win. A good starter plan: tractors in jackets at 8, market by 10, home for lunch and naps, then Pikeville pumpkins at 2 or an early drive to Fall Creek Falls for the Spooktacular. If you do the evening, pack winter coats, hats, a blanket for the hayride, and a flashlight β it’ll be heading toward 39 by bedtime. Little carvers need a grown-up on the knife.

π€ Story Lovers: A Storytelling Weekend in Dayton

The Clyde W. Roddy Library is hosting Dayton’s first Tales Among the Oaks storytelling festival Friday evening, Oct. 16, and all day Saturday, Oct. 17, with Donald Davis, Josh Goforth and Bil Lepp. The Rhea Herald-News reports tickets at $15 for children and $25 for adults, good for both days, on the Rhea County Courthouse lawn. (A Dunlap.Today post lists the site as Centennial Park, 391 2nd Ave. β confirm when you buy.)
Dayton is on Eastern time. In Dunlap time, Saturday’s sessions run 8β9:35 a.m., 10β11:30 a.m., 1β2:30 p.m., 2:50β4:20 p.m. and 6β7:45 p.m. Friday’s show is 6β7:45 p.m. our time.
What it means for you: This is a screen-free outing for kids who love a funny tall tale. One morning session plus lunch downtown is plenty for most elementary kids. Bring cushions or folding chairs, and if your children are little, call the library first to ask which sets fit them best: 423-775-8406.

πΌ Sunday, Oct. 18: An Easy Day β Tractors, a Playground or a Red Panda

After a cold Saturday night, Sunday warms to a sunny 66. A few gentle ideas:
- Days of Yesteryear, day two: same free tractors and kids’ events downtown, 8 a.m.β4 p.m.
- Harris Park playground is open. After a social media rumor this week, the City of Dunlap said it had received no official report, found nothing to confirm it, and inspected the playground with no reason to close it. If you ever see a problem at a city park, report it straight to the City of Dunlap or the Dunlap Police Department.
- NEW: Red panda party at the Chattanooga Zoo. Masala, the cub born July 6, gets a gender reveal party 1:30β4:30 p.m. Eastern (12:30β3:30 p.m. our time) outside the red panda habitat: games, a photo wall, snacks, limited-edition Masala trading cards, and one lucky guest helps make the reveal. It’s free with regular zoo admission (members free too). Zoo: (423) 697-1322.
- Pumpkin patch day: Flat Top Mountain Farm, 638 Bowman Cemetery Road, Soddy Daisy, lists Sunday hours of 11 a.m.β6 p.m. Eastern (10β5 our time). Admission is $12, free for ages 3 and under, and includes a hayride, corn maze and one homegrown pumpkin. The farm is also posting extra fall-break hours Oct. 15β18; check its ticket page for times before you drive.
What it means for you: If Saturday was big, Sunday can be small β a free playground hour and an early bedtime before a busy library week. If the kids are animal-crazy, the zoo trip is the splurge.

β Frequently Asked Questions

What time is Friday’s parade?
The library’s calendar lists 9 a.m. and its weekly post lists 9:30 a.m. Arriving around 9 covers both. School-side details are in our GenAlpha 2/5 skim.
Is the Fall Creek Falls Spooktacular free, and do we have to register?
Tennessee State Parks lists it as free, with optional donations. Its event page offers a registration link, so registering ahead is a good idea. It runs 5β9 p.m. Saturday; the main park road closes at 4:30, so get there early. Call 423-881-5708 with questions.
How cold will Saturday night get?
The NWS Dunlap forecast says clear, with a low around 39. Low spots can run colder. Winter coats and a blanket are the move for anything after dark.
Is the Dayton storytelling festival good for little kids?
It’s built for families, and children’s tickets are $15 (good for both days), per the Rhea Herald-News. Sessions run about 90 minutes, so younger kids may do best with one morning set. Call 423-775-8406 to ask which sessions suit them.
Does the red panda party cost extra?
No. The Chattanooga Zoo says it’s free with zoo admission on Oct. 18, and members can join at no extra cost. Check chattzoo.org for current admission prices. It runs 1:30β4:30 p.m. Eastern, which is 12:30β3:30 p.m. in Dunlap.
Is the Harris Park playground safe to use?
The City of Dunlap says it inspected the playground and found no reason to close it, and it remains open. Report any concern directly to the City of Dunlap or the Dunlap Police Department.
Where can I find scouting for my child?
Try BeAScout.org (ZIP 37327) for nearby units, the Cherokee Area Council in Chattanooga, and Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians. Youth sports and club signups are in our GenAlpha 3/5 skim.
