🌉 One Lane on the Dam, Bluegrass Streets Closing Saturday and a Busy Halloween Weekend Ahead: Your Roads & Commute Report

Or: A Day-by-Day Map of Chattanooga’s Week, Foggy Mornings by the Water, and Why Halloween, a Youth Deer Hunt and the Time Change All Land on the Same Weekend
By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Tuesday on the roads is a lot like Tuesday at the kitchen table: Monday’s mail is sorted, and now it’s time to write a few things on the calendar. Close to home, nothing new has popped up since yesterday. The road crews we told you about are still at work, and the weather is still about as easy as fall gets. Most of today’s news is in Chattanooga, and it’s the planning kind, not the worrying kind.
Here’s what’s in this report: mornings may start with fog near rivers and lakes, then it’s sunny and dry every day through Sunday. Today and tomorrow, one lane of SR-153 across Chickamauga Dam closes during the day for a routine bridge check, and the dam stays open. The city has now listed street closures around Miller Park for Saturday’s free bluegrass festival. We’ve put the whole week in Chattanooga into a simple day-by-day list, with every time already changed to ours. And we take an early look at next weekend, when Halloween, a youth deer hunt and the end of daylight saving time all land within about 36 hours.
β±οΈ What this means for you in 30 seconds
- Early mornings: Fog may be thick near rivers, lakes and creeks. Low beams, more room, slower speed. It lifts after sunup.
- Every afternoon through Sunday: Sunny and dry in Dunlap, highs 72 to 77.
- Today (Tue.) and Wed., 8 a.m.β2 p.m. our time: One lane closed on SR-153 across Chickamauga Dam. The road stays open.
- Wed., Oct. 21, about 6β10 a.m. our time: Emergency vehicles at the Tennessee Aquarium are a drill. Roads stay open.
- Sat., Oct. 24, 6 a.m.β11 p.m. our time: Streets around Miller Park downtown are closed for Pickin’ in the Park.
- Coming up: Halloween is Saturday, Oct. 31, the youth deer hunt is Oct. 31βNov. 1, and clocks fall back at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.
π«οΈ Fog by the Water, Then Blue Skies All Week

The National Weather Service in Morristown said early this morning that frost is becoming less likely as our mornings warm a bit. The thing to watch now is fog. Forecasters said dense fog could form near waterways, where cool night air settles over the warmer water of lakes and rivers.
The rest of the forecast is what the weather service calls “a general wash/rinse/repeat each day”: light winds, mostly sunny skies, low humidity and no rain for the foreseeable future. In Dunlap, that means sunny days from today through Sunday, with highs from 72 to 77 and lows from 45 to 48. Monday looks mostly sunny, with a high near 75.
What it means for you: If your drive starts near the Sequatchie River, the Tennessee River or a lake, give yourself a few extra minutes before sunup. Driving into fog is like reading the paper without your glasses: you can still make it out, but you go slower and pay closer attention. Use your low beams, leave extra room and don’t pass. Sunrise is about 6:52 a.m. today and sunset about 6:00 p.m., so by the time most of us head to town, it’s dry roads and sunshine.

π Chickamauga Dam: One Lane Today and Tomorrow, and the Road Stays Open

The Tennessee Valley Authority and TDOT are doing a routine bridge safety inspection on SR-153 across Chickamauga Dam this week:
- Today, Tuesday, Oct. 20: one of the two northbound lanes is closed, 9 a.m.β3 p.m. Eastern (8 a.m.β2 p.m. our time).
- Wednesday, Oct. 21: one of the two southbound lanes is closed during the same hours.
Drivers can still cross the dam both days. TVA asks folks to slow down, follow the signs and watch for inspection crews.
Meanwhile, the C.B. Robinson Bridge inspection on DuPont Parkway (SR-319) that we listed last week is under way. Crews are in the northbound right lane and shoulder today and tomorrow, then move to the southbound right lane and shoulder Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m.β5 p.m. Eastern (7:30 a.m.β4 p.m. our time) each day.
What it means for you: If you cross the river at the dam to get to Hixson, Northgate or the east side, expect to merge into one lane in one direction and lose a few minutes in the middle of the day. A bridge inspection is like the doctor listening to your heart at a checkup: it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It’s how things stay healthy. If you can make that trip early in the morning or after mid-afternoon, you’ll likely miss it entirely.

πͺ Bluegrass Saturday: Which Downtown Streets Close Around Miller Park

Yesterday we told you we hadn’t spotted any festival street closures. Here’s the update: a Chattanooga Times Free Press report, citing the city’s road-closure notice, says streets around Miller Park and Miller Plaza will close for Pickin’ in the Park, the free part of IBMA World of Bluegrass, on Saturday, Oct. 24.
The closures run from 7 a.m. Saturday through midnight Eastern, which is 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. our time:
- Cherry Street, from the SmartBank parking lot to Georgia Avenue and M.L. King Boulevard
- Georgia Avenue, from M.L. King Boulevard to 10th Street
- 10th Street, from Georgia Avenue to Market Street
- M.L. King Boulevard, from Market Street to Georgia Avenue
The music itself runs 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. our time), with Kids on Bluegrass bands, local groups, a Chattanooga Ballet performance, crafts and food. Organizers say there’s no big fence this year, so you can come and go as you like.
What it means for you: If Saturday’s errand takes you near M.L. King Boulevard or Georgia Avenue downtown, plan a route a few blocks away. It’s like Sunday dinner when the table’s full: everyone still eats, you just pull up a chair in the next room. If you’re going to hear some picking, park a few blocks out and enjoy the walk. And if your Saturday trip has nothing to do with music, staying off the middle of downtown is the easy choice.

ποΈ Chattanooga This Week, Day by Day (All Times Are Ours)

We know it’s hard to keep a week like this straight, so here it is in one place. We’ve already changed every time from Eastern to our Central time. Clip it, snap a picture of it or stick it on the fridge:
- Tuesday, Oct. 20 (today): One northbound lane closed on Chickamauga Dam, 8 a.m.β2 p.m. C.B. Robinson Bridge northbound right lane, 7:30 a.m.β4 p.m. Bluegrass Ramble shows on the Southside, about 4:40β10 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21: Aquarium training drill, about 6β10 a.m. It’s practice, and roads stay open. One southbound lane closed on Chickamauga Dam, 8 a.m.β2 p.m. C.B. Robinson northbound right lane again. Ramble shows in the evening.
- Thursday, Oct. 22: C.B. Robinson switches to the southbound right lane, 7:30 a.m.β4 p.m. Bluegrass Music Awards at Memorial Auditorium at 6 p.m. Last scheduled day for the Popular Springs Road paving closure in Marion County, 8 a.m.β3 p.m.
- Friday, Oct. 23: East Brainerd Road closes from Prosperity Lane to Vance Road at 4 a.m. and stays closed until 4 a.m. Monday, with a signed detour. Last scheduled day for city paving around St. Elmo. The free bluegrass Exhibit Hall at the Convention Center is open 10 a.m.β5 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 24: Streets around Miller Park closed 6 a.m.β11 p.m. Free Pickin’ in the Park, 9 a.m.β8 p.m. Free Exhibit Hall, 10 a.m.β5 p.m.
- Monday, Oct. 26: East Brainerd Road reopens at 4 a.m.
What it means for you: Most days, a Chattanooga trip should feel normal, with maybe a few extra minutes at the dam at midday or near the Convention Center in the evening. The two days to plan around are Wednesday morning (don’t be startled by the drill) and Saturday (go around the Miller Park blocks). If you shop or see the doctor near Hamilton Place, remember East Brainerd is closed all weekend.

π Looking Ahead: Halloween, a Youth Deer Hunt and the Time Change, All in One Weekend

This one is for the calendar, not for this week. Next weekend stacks three things together that all touch our back roads:
- Saturday, Oct. 31: Halloween. Sunset in Dunlap is about 5:48 p.m., and it’s dark by about 6:15, right when little goblins and princesses head out with their candy buckets.
- Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31βNov. 1: Young Sportsman deer hunt. TWRA’s youth hunt lets hunters ages 6 to 16 go out with a non-hunting adult. You may see more trucks pulled off near fields and woods, and more folks in blaze orange, especially around dawn.
- Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 a.m.: clocks fall back one hour. Starting Monday, Nov. 2, sunrise in Dunlap moves to about 6:04 a.m. and sunset to about 4:46 p.m. That’s more than an hour earlier than tonight’s 6 p.m. sunset, so many of us will drive home in the dark, which is also prime time for deer.
What it means for you: Halloween night, drive like every shadow by the mailbox might be a pint-sized superhero, because it might be. Slow down in neighborhoods and church parking lots with trunk-or-treats, and watch for kids crossing between parked cars. On hunt weekend, give parked trucks and walkers on the shoulder extra room. And on Sunday morning, remember to set back the clock on the stove and in the truck. It’s like the first cold morning when you dig out the jacket: once you’re used to it, it feels normal again.

- Sequatchie County: flaggers for resurfacing on U.S. 127 (Marion County line to Wilson Road), SR-111, SR-399 and SR-8. A striping crew also has stops at SR-111 and SR-8.
- Nights, Sunday through Thursday: I-24 resurfacing in Marion County (mile markers 152.2 to 156), 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with ramps closing now and then and at least one ramp always open.
- Marion County: Popular Springs Road closed 8 a.m.β3 p.m. through Thursday. SR-108 stays at one lane with a temporary signal for slide repairs.

π Plain-English Roads Glossary

- Bridge inspection: A regular checkup where crews look over a bridge up close. It’s routine and doesn’t mean something is wrong.
- Lane closure vs. road closure: A lane closure means one lane is blocked, but you can still get through. A road closure means you can’t drive that stretch at all and need a detour.
- Special-event closure: Streets a city closes for a festival, parade or race so people can walk around safely.
- Dense fog: Fog thick enough that you can see only a short distance ahead. Slow down until it lifts.
- Young Sportsman hunt: A short hunting season just for kids ages 6 to 16, who must go with a non-hunting adult 21 or older.
- Blaze orange: The bright orange that hunters wear so other people can see them.
- Fall back: The end of daylight saving time. Clocks go back one hour, so mornings get lighter and evenings get darker sooner.
- Eastern vs. Central time: Chattanooga is on Eastern time. Dunlap, Pikeville and Jasper are on Central, one hour earlier.

π A Calm Week, a Clear Calendar and a Fun Weekend Coming

Here’s all you need to remember: take it slow in the morning fog near the water, expect one lane on Chickamauga Dam today and tomorrow, don’t worry about the Aquarium drill Wednesday morning, and go around the Miller Park blocks on Saturday. Close to home, the road crews are still at it, and a little patience is all they ask. Next weekend, watch for trick-or-treaters and young hunters, and set the clocks back Saturday night. A week like this is as easy as shelling peas on the porch, as long as you know what’s in the bowl.
Drive easy, wave at the flaggers and enjoy the sunshine. Read Dunlap.Today for road and weather updates as they come in.
