Or: Pack a Free Lunch Concert in Cookeville, Trick-or-Treat Along a State Park Trail, Wander a Garden After Dark, Shop a Holiday Market in Dalton and Hear a Bluegrass Legend Live β€” Seven New Day Trips Within About 100 Miles of Dunlap

By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Thursday, October 15, 2026

Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number thirty-one of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. Same promise as always: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it, in plain words. And no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.

This round starts tomorrow morning on the lake and runs into mid-November: a short Fall Colors Pontoon Tour at Fall Creek Falls State Park, free Brown Bag Lunch Concerts on the Cookeville Depot patio, a free Trail of Treats at Bledsoe Creek State Park near Gallatin, Meow-o-ween (yes, cats in costume) and adults-only Spellbound nights at Huntsville Botanical Garden, Dalton’s Jingle & Mingle Market, and bluegrass legend Sam Bush at McMinnville’s Park Theater.

⏱️ Your 30-second trip list

  • Fri., Oct. 16, 10 a.m. Central: Fall Colors Pontoon Tour, Fall Creek Falls State Park. $15 adults, $10 children. Register; 10 people per tour.
  • Fri., Oct. 16, 23 & 30, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Central: Brown Bag Lunch Concerts, Cookeville Depot Museum. Free.
  • Sat., Oct. 24, 6–8 p.m. Central: Trail of Treats, Bledsoe Creek State Park, Gallatin. Free.
  • Mon., Oct. 26, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Central: Meow-o-ween, Huntsville Botanical Garden. Included with Garden admission; costumes encouraged.
  • Oct. 21–25 & 28–31 evenings, Central: Spellbound (21+), Huntsville Botanical Garden. Advance tickets from about $12 members / $17 non-members.
  • Sat., Nov. 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Eastern (9 a.m.–3 p.m. our time): 7th Annual Jingle & Mingle Market, Mack Gaston Community Center, Dalton, GA.
  • Fri., Nov. 13, 7:30 p.m. Central: Sam Bush, Park Theater, McMinnville. Tickets from about $40.

πŸ•°οΈ The one thing to remember: most of this batch is on Central Time β€” same as Dunlap. Fall Creek Falls, Cookeville, Gallatin, Huntsville and McMinnville all run on Central. Only Dalton, Georgia, is Eastern, one hour ahead. For Dalton, subtract an hour to get Dunlap time. Write it on the calendar the way you’ll read it at 5 a.m.: “9 a.m. OUR time” beats “10 a.m. Eastern” every time.

🚀 Ride Fall Creek Falls Lake Under the Autumn Leaves Tomorrow Morning

If the leaves are turning and the lake is calm, there’s hardly a better hour than a guided pontoon ride. At Fall Creek Falls State Park, ranger staff lead a short Fall Colors Pontoon Tour of the park lake. It’s only about an hour on the water, limited to 10 people, and it starts early enough that you can still make lunch in Spencer or be home by noon. Register online or call the visitors center; same-day spots may open at the boat dock if anyone cancels.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Fri., Oct. 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Central (same as Dunlap). Meeting notes say meet at the boat dock; allow a few extra minutes for check-in.
  • Where: Fall Creek Falls State Park boat dock, 2009 Village Camp Road, Spencer, TN 38585.
  • How far: About 30–40 miles, roughly 45–55 minutes, by way of Pikeville and TN-30 / TN-111 toward Spencer. Approximate; check your map app.
  • Cost: $15 adults, $10 children. Register ahead at the park events page or call 423-881-5298.
  • Who’ll love it: Leaf-peepers who prefer sitting to hiking, grandparents with grandkids, photographers and anybody who wants a short, easy outing tomorrow.
  • Good to know: Park schedules can change with weather. Bring a light jacket for the breeze on the water. If this slot fills, ask the visitors center about other pontoon times the same week.

The Brown Bag Lunch Concert Series runs 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., admission is free, and you can pack a sandwich or buy lunch on site (Blue Coast Burrito has been listed as the on-site option). Oct. 16 features The Ballingers; later Fridays keep the same hours β€” check the Depot for that week’s performers.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • Cost: Free concerts. Optional lunch for purchase on site.
  • Who’ll love it: Early-lunch folks, retirees, remote workers who can stretch a Friday noon break, and anyone who likes live music without a ticket line.
  • Good to know: It’s outdoors, so dress for the weather and bring a folding chair if you want extra comfort. Call the Depot at 931-528-8570 if you need that day’s performer confirmed.

Yes, really. Meow-o-ween is the Halloween twist on the Garden’s Meowy Mondays: bring your feline (on a leash or in a secure carrier), costumes encouraged for cats and humans, stroll the autumn displays and Scarecrow Trail, and β€” if you like β€” sit for a professional pet photo between 4 and 6 p.m. Local rescue adoptable cats are expected on site, too. It’s part of the Garden’s larger FestiFall season.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Mon., Oct. 26, 2026, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Central (Huntsville is Central, same as Dunlap).

  • Who’ll love it: Cat people, social-media grandparents, kids who think a tuxedo-cat in a cape is the height of comedy, and anyone looking for a calm weekday outing.
  • Good to know: Leashes or secure carriers required. Only bring a cat that travels well. Phone: 256-830-4447.

Illustration for 🌙 Wander the Garden After Dark at Spellbound (Adults 21+)

When the kids are in bed β€” or when you want a date night without a jump-scare haunted house β€” Spellbound turns Huntsville Botanical Garden into a self-guided nighttime stroll. Dramatic lighting, atmospheric sound, seasonal dΓ©cor, live music in spots, firepits and seasonal drinks. Organizers are clear: it’s mysterious, not a haunted attraction. Valid photo ID required; ages 21 and up only.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Oct. 21–25 and Oct. 28–31, 2026, on Central Time. Weeknights generally 7–10 p.m. (last entry 9 p.m.); Fridays and Saturdays 7–11 p.m. (last entry 10 p.m.). Allow at least an hour; stay longer if you like.
  • Where: Huntsville Botanical Garden, 4747 Bob Wallace Ave. SW, Huntsville, AL 35805.
  • How far: About 85–95 miles, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes–2 hours. Same drive as Meow-o-ween. Approximate; check your map app.
  • Cost: Advance tickets about $12 members / $17 non-members; day-of about $15 / $25. Buy for your chosen night; door sales possible until last entry if tickets remain.
  • Who’ll love it: Couples, friend groups, costume fans (no full-face masks or realistic weapon props) and anyone who wants Halloween atmosphere without scream houses.
  • Good to know: Outdoor pathways β€” wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Rain-or-shine unless severe weather. Pair it with a Huntsville dinner before 7 if you’re making the drive.

Illustration for 🎄 Shop Local Treasures at Dalton's Jingle & Mingle Market

North Georgia kicks off holiday browsing early. The 7th Annual Jingle & Mingle Market fills the Mack Gaston Community Center in Dalton with local vendors, handmade goods, unique finds and seasonal dΓ©cor β€” the kind of market where you can knock out gifts for the hard-to-buy folks without a mall crawl. Same weekend, downtown Dalton also runs a multi-day Holiday Open House (Nov. 5–8) if you want to stretch the trip.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Sat., Nov. 7, 2026, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Eastern. That’s 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Dunlap time.
  • Where: Mack Gaston Community Center, 218 N. Fredrick St., Dalton, GA.
  • How far: About 65–75 miles, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes–1 hour 30 minutes, by way of Chattanooga and I-75 south. Approximate; check your map app.
  • Cost: Market listings don’t always post a door fee; treat it as a shopping day and bring cash plus a card. Confirm any admission on Visit Dalton’s event page before you go.
  • Who’ll love it: Early Christmas shoppers, handmade-gift fans and anyone who likes a one-stop indoor market.
  • Good to know: Georgia is Eastern Time. Leave the Valley by about 8 a.m. our time if you want the opening hour. Pair with lunch in Dalton or a stop at Tunnel Hill on the way home.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration for ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?

No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. All seven are new for article #31. We’ve listed other Fall Creek Falls programs, other Huntsville Botanical Garden FestiFall pieces (like the Scarecrow Trail) and other McMinnville shows before, but this pontoon tour, the Brown Bag Lunch series, Trail of Treats, Meow-o-ween, Spellbound, Jingle & Mingle and Sam Bush are separate and new to the list.

Which ones are free?

Brown Bag Lunch Concerts and Trail of Treats are free. Meow-o-ween is included with Garden admission (people pay regular admission unless you’re a member under the Garden’s posted rules). The pontoon tour is $15/$10, Spellbound is ticketed, Sam Bush starts around $40, and Jingle & Mingle is a shopping market β€” confirm any door fee before you go.

Which ones are best for young kids?

Trail of Treats is the clearest costume-and-candy fit. The pontoon tour and Brown Bag concerts work for kids who can sit still for an hour. Meow-o-ween is fun if your child loves cats β€” but only if the family cat travels well. Spellbound and Sam Bush are for adults (Spellbound is 21+).

Eastern or Central: which clock do I set?

Dunlap and Sequatchie County are on Central. So are Fall Creek Falls, Cookeville, Gallatin, Huntsville and McMinnville β€” no clock math. Dalton, Georgia, is Eastern, one hour ahead. Subtract an hour from Dalton’s posted times.

Can I do Meow-o-ween and Spellbound on the same Huntsville trip?

Not on the same day easily β€” Meow-o-ween is a Monday daytime event (Oct. 26) and Spellbound is evening-only on select October nights. You could make two Huntsville trips, or pair Spellbound with a Friday/Saturday dinner in town on one of the ticketed nights.

How do you pick these events?

We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page or a trusted listing whenever we can. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
