Or: Savage Gulf Day Loop, Thanksgiving at Fall Creek Falls and Pikeville’s 30th Colonial Christmas Parade β€” Eight New Day Trips Within About 100 Miles of Dunlap

Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number eighteen of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. As always, we lay it out plain: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it. And as always, no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.

This round stretches from fairgrounds pumpkins to a parade with a nation-birthday twist: Cookeville’s free Pumpkin Fest at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, four nights of Haunted Grounds at McDonald Farm in Sale Creek, a guided Savage Gulf Day Loop hike for fall color, Dunlap’s own Christmas Shop Hop, the 4th Annual Christkindlmarkt Commons in Collegedale and the 5th Annual Christkindlmarkt Signal Mountain (both different from the already-covered Coolidge Park weekends), Thanksgiving at Fall Creek Falls at the Lodge, and Pikeville’s 30th Annual Christmas Parade under an “A Star-Spangled Colonial Christmas” theme.

⏱️ Your 30-second trip list

  • Sat., Oct. 17, noon–9 p.m. Central: Pumpkin Fest, Putnam County Fairgrounds, Cookeville. Free entry & parking.
  • Wed.–Sat., Oct. 28–31: Haunted Grounds, McDonald Farm, Sale Creek. Wed–Thu 4–10 p.m. Eastern; Fri–Sat noon–10 p.m. Eastern. Ages 9+ $20; 8 & under $7.
  • Sat., Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Central: Savage Gulf Day Loop guided hike, Palmer. $10.
  • Sat., Nov. 7, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Central: Christmas Shop Hop, downtown Dunlap. Free passport.
  • Sat.–Sun., Nov. 7–8: Christkindlmarkt Commons, Collegedale. Sat 10 a.m.–7 p.m. / Sun 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Eastern. Free.
  • Sat.–Sun., Nov. 14–15: Christkindlmarkt Signal Mountain, MACC. Same hours. Free.
  • Thu., Nov. 26, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Central: Thanksgiving at Fall Creek Falls, The Lodge. Buffet β€” reserve when menu opens; check before you go.
  • Sat., Nov. 28, 5–8 p.m. Central: Pikeville 30th Christmas Parade, downtown Main Street. Free to watch.

πŸ•°οΈ The one thing to remember: the time line. Sale Creek / McDonald Farm, Collegedale and Signal Mountain run on Eastern Time, one hour ahead of us. So a 4 p.m. Eastern Haunted Grounds open is 3 p.m. our time, and a 10 a.m. Eastern Christkindlmarkt open is 9 a.m. our time. Cookeville, Savage Gulf / Palmer, Dunlap, Fall Creek Falls and Pikeville are on Central Time, same as home. Clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov. 1 β€” after that, Eastern is still one hour ahead.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration for ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?

No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. This batch is all new names for article #18. Christkindlmarkt Commons and Christkindlmarkt Signal Mountain are different venues from the already-covered Coolidge Park Christkindlmarkt. Haunted Grounds is a separate October event from the already-covered Hamilton County Fair at the same McDonald Farm in November.

Is Haunted Grounds too scary for little kids?

Some attractions include darkness, loud sounds and jump scares. Ages 8 and under are cheaper, but parental discretion is advised. If your crew wants candy without mazes, pick an earlier evening or a different outing.

Which Nov. 7 outing should we pick?

Dunlap Shop Hop is free and right downtown. Collegedale Christkindlmarkt is the farther European-market kickoff (~45–55 miles, Eastern Time). Many families do Shop Hop in the morning and one farther stop later β€” or just stay home and stamp passports.

Do we need tickets?

Pumpkin Fest, Shop Hop, both Christkindlmarkts and watching the Pikeville parade are free. Haunted Grounds is paid ($20 / $7). Savage Gulf Day Loop is $10 with park registration. Thanksgiving buffet needs a lodge reservation once pricing posts β€” check before you go.

Eastern or Central β€” which clock do I set?

Dunlap / Sequatchie is Central. Sale Creek, Collegedale and Signal Mountain run Eastern (one hour ahead). Cookeville, Savage Gulf / Palmer, Fall Creek Falls and Pikeville match us on Central.

How do you pick these events?

We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page whenever we can. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
