By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Sunday, October 18, 2026
Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number forty-five of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. Same promise as always: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it, in plain words. And no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.
This round starts on Halloween and walks you right up to Christmas. On Saturday evening, Oct. 31, Scottsboro’s courthouse square, home of a trade day tradition that dates to 1902, turns into a free Halloween on the Square. Starting Friday, Nov. 6, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum serves a Christmas Tea upstairs at its Chattanooga depot. Saturday, Nov. 7, brings Huntsville’s Apple Annie Carnival, and that weekend Cleveland’s free Tangled Tinsel Holiday Market fills a mall with more than 150 vendors (Nov. 7β8). On Saturday, Nov. 14, KIDstruction Fest in Cleveland lets kids climb on real construction equipment. Saturday, Nov. 21, is a two-fer in North Georgia: the free Satur-Dade Market in Trenton and the season opening of Winter Skating at Stable 41 in Fort Oglethorpe, which throws its Christmas in Fort Oglethorpe party on Nov. 28. And on Saturday, Dec. 5, the Cloudland Holiday Maker’s Market sets up on top of Lookout Mountain.
β±οΈ Your 30-second trip list
- Sat., Oct. 31, 5:30β8 p.m. (Central β our time): Halloween on the Square, downtown Scottsboro, Ala. Free trunk-or-treat.
- Nov. 6, 2026βJan. 3, 2027 (Eastern β subtract an hour): Christmas Tea, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, Chattanooga. $45 tea only; $60 with a vintage train ride. Reserve ahead.

- Sat., Nov. 21 (Eastern listing β see the hours note below): Satur-Dade Market, Veterans Memorial Park, Trenton, Ga. Free.
- Nov. 21, 2026βJan. 17, 2027, listed 4β8 p.m. (Eastern β 3β7 p.m. our time): Winter Skating at Stable 41, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. Price not posted yet. Sat., Nov. 28, 6β9 p.m. Eastern: Christmas in Fort Oglethorpe.

π°οΈ The one thing to remember: six of these are on Eastern time. Chattanooga, Cleveland, Trenton, Fort Oglethorpe and Lookout Mountain, Ga., are Eastern, one hour ahead of us, so subtract an hour: KIDstruction Fest’s 11 a.m. start is 10 a.m. OUR time. Huntsville and Scottsboro are Central, same as Dunlap. And remember: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Set the clocks back an hour Saturday night, Oct. 31 β the same night as Scottsboro’s Halloween on the Square. After that, it’s dark by about 5 p.m., so plan evening trips with a driver who’s comfortable at night.
π Trick-or-Treat on Scottsboro’s Old Trade Day Square at Halloween on the Square

Scottsboro’s courthouse square has been a gathering place for a long, long time. The city’s monthly Trade Day β folks still call it “First Monday” β started as Horse Swapper’s Day on Dec. 1, 1902, and it’s billed as Scottsboro’s oldest tradition. These days it’s a Saturday event, and the October 31 Trade Day is a family evening: Halloween on the Square, with decorated car trunks full of candy, costumes and food trucks.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Sat., Oct. 31, 2026, 5:30β8 p.m. Central β our time.
- Where: Downtown Square, 316 S. Broad St., Scottsboro, AL 35768.
- How far: About 70β75 miles, roughly 1ΒΌβ1Β½ hours, by way of Jasper, South Pittsburg and U.S. 72. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Free. Bring cash for the food trucks.
- Who’ll love it: Little goblins and princesses, grandparents who like watching them, and anybody who wants a small-town Halloween with a bit of history under foot.
- Good to know: Central Time β same as us. It ends after dark, so bring a flashlight and a co-pilot for the drive home, and watch for trick-or-treaters on the roads. That’s also the night the clocks fall back. Want a daytime Trade Day instead? Scottsboro’s Jingle Bell Square Trade Day is Sat., Dec. 5 (we featured it in an earlier list).

π« Sip Christmas Tea Upstairs at a Chattanooga Railroad Depot

Here’s a gentle, sit-down outing for a mother and daughter, a pair of old friends or a grandma and her favorite grandkid. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, founded in 1961 to keep old trains running, serves a 75-minute holiday tea in the decorated upstairs viewing room at its Grand Junction Depot. Expect premium teas, freshly baked scones, savory bites and sweets; the sample menu mentions things like chicken salad croissants, seasonal soup, tea sandwiches and holiday pastries. Your ticket also gets you into the museum’s holiday-decorated exhibit building.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Fri., Nov. 6, 2026, through Sun., Jan. 3, 2027, at reserved seating times. Eastern Time β subtract an hour. Arrive at least 30 minutes early; late arrivals may not be seated.
- Where: Grand Junction Depot, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, 4119 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421. Phone (423) 894-8028.
- How far: About 45β50 miles, roughly 50β60 minutes, by way of Chattanooga. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: $45 for tea only, or $60 for tea plus a ride on the vintage Missionary Ridge Local train. Gratuity isn’t included. Reserve ahead; weekend dates often sell out.
- Who’ll love it: Tea lovers, train lovers and anyone who’d rather have a quiet, pretty table than a crowded restaurant.
- Good to know: The tea room is upstairs, and the old train cars have boarding steps. If stairs are hard for you, call before you book. Children under 12 need a parent or guardian. Allow about 2 hours for tea only, 2Β½β3 hours with the train.

π Play Carnival Games and Pet the Animals at Huntsville’s Apple Annie Carnival

The Junior League of Huntsville throws its 6th Apple Annie Carnival on a lawn in the middle of town, and it’s built for kids: carnival games, a petting zoo, bounce houses and an obstacle course. It’s a short, four-hour afternoon, which makes it easy to pair with lunch in Huntsville.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Sat., Nov. 7, 2026, noonβ4 p.m. Central β our time.
- Where: S.R. Butler Green at Campus 805, 2620 Clinton Ave. W., Huntsville, AL 35805.

- Cost: One wristband $30; two wristbands $50; game tickets $2 each (per the Junior League’s ticket page).
- Who’ll love it: Kids who like to bounce, climb and win a prize, and grown-ups who like their outing money to help a local volunteer group.

π Get a Head Start on Christmas at Cleveland’s Tangled Tinsel Holiday Market

If the weather turns raw, this is a shopping trip that keeps you warm and dry. The Tangled Tinsel Holiday Market fills Bradley Square Mall with more than 150 vendors for one weekend. The event listing says to expect handmade and commercial vendors, and it mentions Santa. It comes from the same organizer as the Chattanooga Christmas Village market we featured last time.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Sat., Nov. 7, 10 a.m.β5 p.m., and Sun., Nov. 8, noonβ5 p.m., 2026. Eastern β that’s 9 a.m.β4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.β4 p.m. Sunday our time.
- Where: Bradley Square Mall, 200 Paul Huff Pkwy. NW, Cleveland, TN 37312. Organizer phone (423) 650-1388.
- How far: About 65β75 miles, roughly 1ΒΌ hours, by way of Chattanooga and I-75. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Free admission and free parking, per the FestivalNet listing. The organizer’s own page doesn’t list a price, so check before you go.

- Good to know: Eastern Time β subtract an hour. Sunday starts later, at noon Eastern.

π Let the Kids Climb a Real Bulldozer at KIDstruction Fest in Cleveland

Every family has one: the child who stops cold to watch a backhoe dig. KIDstruction Fest is a whole day built for them. The listing promises kids can climb on real construction equipment (“Touch it. Drive it. LOVE it!”), plus hands-on activities, food vendors and local vendors in a festival setting. The motto is “Big equipment. Big fun. Built for kids.”

- Cost: Not posted β check before you go. Bring cash for food.
- Who’ll love it: Little ones who love trucks and diggers, and the grandparents who’ll take the pictures.

It’s an easy, short drive, and it’s free.

The event description on the same page says 9 a.m.β3 p.m. Those may be the same hours written for two clocks, since some Dade County folks keep Central time, but check before you go.

β Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?
No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. All eight are new for article #45. We’ve featured other events at some of the same places β like Scottsboro’s Jingle Bell Square, the museum’s North Pole Limited and Santa train rides, the Chattanooga Christmas Village market and Fort O Fright at Stable 41 β but these are separate events.
Which ones are free?
Halloween on the Square and the Satur-Dade Market are free. The Tangled Tinsel Holiday Market is listed as free admission and free parking. The Cloudland market lists no admission price, but valet parking costs extra. The Christmas Tea is $45, or $60 with a train ride. Apple Annie wristbands are $30. KIDstruction Fest and Stable 41 skating haven’t posted prices yet, so check before you go.
Which ones are best for young kids?
KIDstruction Fest (real construction machines), the Apple Annie Carnival (petting zoo and bounce houses), Halloween on the Square (trunk-or-treat) and Christmas in Fort Oglethorpe (parade and Santa).
Which ones are easiest if I don’t walk far?
The Tangled Tinsel market is indoors on flat mall floors. The Christmas Tea is a sit-down meal, but the tea room is upstairs, so call ahead about access. At Stable 41, you can watch the skaters from under the covered pavilion with a cup of cocoa.
Eastern or Central: which clock do I set?
Dunlap and Sequatchie County are on Central. Huntsville and Scottsboro are Central too. Chattanooga, Cleveland, Trenton, Fort Oglethorpe and Lookout Mountain, Ga., are Eastern, one hour ahead β subtract an hour.
How do you pick these events?
We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page or a trusted listing whenever we can. When a detail isn’t posted, we say so. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
