Or: Wave at the Old Tractors Again, Rest Up for Monday’s Voting, and Check Your Drug Plan’s Price
By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today · Sunday, October 18, 2026
Good morning, neighbor. It’s a chilly start, but the wind has finally laid down, and today looks like one of the prettiest days of the fall. The free Days of Yesteryear tractor show has its second day, with gates opening at 8 a.m. Central. It’ll be sunny and calm, with a high near 68°F. There is no early voting today. It reopens Monday at 9 a.m. And there’s one Medicare item worth a calm look over coffee. Let’s take it one cup at a time.
⏱️ Your 30-second morning recap
- Yesterday: National news reports said some stand-alone Medicare drug plans will cost $50 or more a month extra in 2027 if you keep the same plan. Open enrollment runs through Dec. 7.
- Yesterday: Reports said Congress passed a bill that would rename some Social Security age terms. It does not change your check or your ages.
- Good to know: 512 Sequatchie County voters had voted early or absentee through Friday.
- Today: Tractor show gates at 8 a.m. at 287 Pine St., free. RAM’s free clinic in Chattanooga has a shorter second day.
- Weather: The National Weather Service forecast for Dunlap (updated about 1:26 a.m. Central) calls for sunny skies, a high near 68°F and light winds. Tonight will be clear, with a low around 40°F.
📝 Jot This Down: today’s 3 things to remember
- The tractor show is free today, and the gates open at 8 a.m. It’s at Coops Creek Commons, 287 Pine St., Dunlap, with free parking.
- No early voting today. It reopens Monday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 68 Spring St. Bring a photo ID.
- Find the letter from your drug plan. It’s called the Annual Notice of Change. Set it by your coffee cup for Monday. You have until Dec. 7.
Tomorrow’s heads-up: Monday, Oct. 19 will be sunny, near 71°F. Early voting is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and in past elections Monday has been one of the busier days. In Marion County, Popular Springs Road closes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday for paving.

💊 Some Medicare Drug Plans Will Cost More in 2027

On Saturday, NBC News reported that premiums for some stand-alone Part D drug plans are going up by $50 or more a month next year. That adds up to at least $600 a year for people who keep the same plan. About 25 million Americans have this kind of plan, which goes with Original Medicare.
A separate Checkbook.org report published Saturday said some Part D premiums will jump by as much as 200 percent, and that some Medicare Advantage plans are shrinking their service areas or closing.
There’s some good news, too. The same report said more than 20 million people with Part B are getting a one-time $90 payment this month. You don’t qualify if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, if Medicaid pays your Part B premium, or if you pay the higher-income surcharge (called IRMAA). To check if you qualify, call 1-800-MEDICARE. To check on a payment, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.
What it means for you: Nothing changes until Jan. 1, 2027, and you have until Monday, Dec. 7 to decide. Look for the letter your plan mailed, the Annual Notice of Change, and find next year’s monthly price. If it went up a lot, call TN SHIP at 1-877-801-0044 for free help with no sales pitch.

📋 Social Security Words May Change, but Your Check Won’t

A Washington roundup published Saturday reported that Congress passed the Claiming Age Clarity Act. The Senate approved it on Sept. 29, and it now needs the President’s signature.
The bill changes only the names Social Security uses. “Full retirement age” would become “standard monthly benefit age.” “Early eligibility age” would become “minimum monthly benefit age.” The idea is to make it clearer that claiming early means a smaller monthly check.
What it means for you: If you already get Social Security, nothing changes. Your ages and your benefit amount stay the same. If someone calls saying a “new law” means you must update your account or pay a fee, hang up. That’s a scam. Call Social Security yourself at 1-800-772-1213.

🗳️ 512 Neighbors Have Voted Early, and Here Are the Quieter Days

Through Friday, 512 Sequatchie County voters had voted early or absentee for the Tuesday, Nov. 3 election, according to the Tennessee Firefly tracker, which uses state counts. Saturday’s half-day numbers weren’t posted yet.
The same tracker looked back at past elections here. The lightest days left have been Saturday, Oct. 24 (9 a.m. to noon), Thursday, Oct. 22, and Wednesday, Oct. 28. The busiest have been the last day, Thursday, Oct. 29, and Monday, Oct. 19. That’s history, not a promise.
What it means for you: If standing in line is hard on your knees, aim for Thursday, Oct. 22 or Wednesday, Oct. 28. Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Election Commission, 68 Spring St. Call ahead to confirm at (423) 949-2431.

⛪ Church, Rest and an Evening Seminar

For many of us, Sunday means church, a good dinner and a nap. If you’d like an evening program, the community calendar at Sequatchie.com lists “The Future Unfolding,” a Bible prophecy seminar, at 6 p.m. Central at 105 Apache Lane, Dunlap. It’s listed again Monday through Wednesday at 6 p.m. No phone number or cost is listed, so call ahead to confirm if you can.
The Senior Center and the library are closed today. Call the Senior Center at (423) 949-2228 on a weekday about meals and rides.
What it means for you: Rest counts as a plan. If someone at church lives alone, today is a fine day to ask how they’re doing with the colder nights.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

No. There’s no Sunday voting in Sequatchie County. Early voting reopens Monday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central at the Election Commission, 68 Spring St., Dunlap, and runs through Thursday, Oct. 29. Bring a Tennessee or federal photo ID. To confirm, call (423) 949-2431.
Is the tractor show open today?
Yes. The Dunlap-Tribune lists the show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at Coops Creek Commons, 287 Pine St. Admission and parking are free. For questions, call Paul Swafford at (423) 618-0540 or Bill Gray at (423) 949-2815.
Is my Medicare drug plan going up?
It depends on your plan. NBC News reported that some stand-alone Part D plans will cost $50 or more a month extra in 2027. Check the Annual Notice of Change letter your plan mailed you. For free, unbiased help comparing plans, call TN SHIP at 1-877-801-0044 before Dec. 7.
Will I get the $90 Medicare payment?
Maybe. A Checkbook.org report said more than 20 million people with Part B are getting a one-time $90 payment. People in Medicare Advantage, people whose Part B premium is paid by Medicaid, and people who pay IRMAA don’t qualify. Call 1-800-MEDICARE to check eligibility, or Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to check on a payment.
Is Social Security changing my retirement age?
No. The Claiming Age Clarity Act, which reports say still needs the President’s signature, would change only the names of the ages, not the ages themselves or your benefit amount.

It’s on Eastern Time, because it’s in Chattanooga. Doors open at 6 a.m. Eastern, which is 5 a.m. in Dunlap. Sunday is a shorter day, so check ramusa.org before you drive.
