🚧 Fresh Blacktop on U.S. 127, Flaggers on the Signal Mountain Road and an Easy Weekend at Home: Your Roads & Commute Report

Or: New Resurfacing on U.S. 127 South of Dunlap, Daytime Flaggers Coming to Signal Mountain Road and Suck Creek Road, a Monday Paving Stop in Marion County, and What’s Closed This Weekend
By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Friday, October 16, 2026
Friday on the roads is like Friday at the hardware store: folks are picking up what they need for the weekend and already thinking about Monday’s list. TDOT posted its new weekly road report this morning, so today we’ve got a fresh look at the week ahead. The short version is good news. Home roads stay calm, and most of the changes are daytime flagger jobs you can plan around with a few spare minutes.
Here’s what’s in this report: new resurfacing on U.S. 127 (SR-28) from the Marion County line to Wilson Road, plus fresh striping at SR-111 and SR-8. Starting Monday, Oct. 19, daytime flaggers work on Signal Mountain Road and Suck Creek Road, the two mountain routes many of us use to reach Chattanooga. In Marion County, the road in front of the Love’s on SR-27 closes for paving Monday, and Popular Springs Road closes during the day, Oct. 19β22. Next week also brings a bridge inspection on DuPont Parkway and a weekend closure on East Brainerd Road. Tonight’s breeze, I-65 in Nashville and a few weekend leftovers round things out.
β±οΈ What this means for you in 30 seconds
- At home: Flaggers for resurfacing on U.S. 127 (Marion County line to Wilson Road), SR-111, SR-399 and SR-8. Striping crews at SR-111 and SR-8.
- Starting Monday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m.β2 p.m.: Flaggers on Signal Mountain Road (Runyan Drive to Glendale Drive) and Suck Creek Road (near the Signal Mountain sewer plant to Southview Street), through Dec. 4.
- Marion County, Monday, Oct. 19: SR-27 (TVA Road) in front of Love’s closed 7 a.m.β4 p.m. for paving. Popular Springs Road closed 8 a.m.β3 p.m., Oct. 19β22.
- Chattanooga next week: C.B. Robinson Bridge (DuPont Parkway) right-lane closures Oct. 20β23, 8:30 a.m.β5 p.m. East Brainerd Road closed Prosperity Lane to Vance Road from 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26.
- Tonight: Gusts up to 30 mph, then a chilly, sunny weekend. I-65 in Nashville closes 8 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Monday.
π£οΈ New at Home: Fresh Blacktop on U.S. 127 South of Dunlap

TDOT’s new report for Oct. 15β21 adds a job close to home: resurfacing on U.S. 127 (SR-28) in Sequatchie County, from the Marion County line to Wilson Road. The contractor will use single-lane closures with flaggers.
The other home jobs keep going, all with flaggers and one lane open:
- SR-111: resurfacing from near Lewis Chapel Road to near East Valley Road.
- SR-399: resurfacing from the Grundy County line to near SR-111, and on the Grundy side from SR-108 to our county line.
- SR-8: resurfacing in both directions from south of Whitlow Road to north of Sherman Road.
TDOT also lists a striping crew laying long-lasting pavement markings at the SR-111 and SR-8 intersection, with a truck-mounted crash cushion following the crew and brief lane closures or shifts. The same crew has stops at SR-30 and U.S. 127 in Bledsoe County and on SR-111 in Van Buren County.
What it means for you: If you drive U.S. 127 south toward Whitwell, Jasper or I-24, give yourself an extra 5 to 10 minutes and expect to stop for a flagger now and then. Fresh striping is like a new coat of paint on the barn: it might slow you down for a minute while it goes on, but you’ll see it a lot better on a dark, rainy night.

β°οΈ Monday: Daytime Flaggers on Signal Mountain Road and Suck Creek Road

Plenty of Valley folks reach Chattanooga by coming down off Signal Mountain. TDOT’s report lists two utility jobs on those routes, both starting Monday, Oct. 19, and running through Friday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
- Signal Mountain Road (SR-8): flagger-assisted lane closures between Runyan Drive and Glendale Drive.
- Suck Creek Road (SR-27): flagger-assisted lane closures between the Signal Mountain sewer plant and Southview Street. TDOT also lists separate EPB utility work with flaggers on Suck Creek Road through Oct. 30.
What it means for you: Early-morning commuters and anyone heading home after 2 p.m. should miss it entirely. If you have a midday appointment in town, add 10 minutes or so. It’s like waiting your turn at the one-lane bridge on a back road: a short pause, a friendly wave and you’re on your way.

β½ Marion County: A Monday Paving Stop and Popular Springs Road

TDOT says that on Monday, Oct. 19, the roadway in front of the Love’s on SR-27 (TVA Road) will be closed for paving from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. That same Monday, as SValleyNow reported earlier this week, Popular Springs Road begins its daytime paving closure, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central, Monday through Thursday, Oct. 19β22, weather permitting, with emergency access kept open.
Also in Marion County, I-24 resurfacing between mile markers 152.2 and 156 picks back up Sunday night, with single-lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and occasional ramp closures with at least one ramp open. SR-108 at the slide repair stays one lane with temporary signals.
What it means for you: If you usually fuel up or grab a coffee at that Love’s, plan to stop before 7 a.m. or after 4 p.m. on Monday, or use another station. It’s a one-day job, like the church parking lot getting a fresh topcoat: a little detour on Monday, then a smoother lot for a good long while.

π Chattanooga Next Week: A Bridge Check and an East Brainerd Weekend Closure

- C.B. Robinson Bridge (DuPont Parkway, SR-319): TDOT’s routine inspection runs Tuesday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 23, with daily lane and shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The northbound right lane is affected Oct. 20β21, and the southbound right lane Oct. 22β23.
- East Brainerd Road (SR-320): For the railroad bridge replacement project, the road will be closed from Prosperity Lane to Vance Road from 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, for drainage work and clearing. A signed detour will be in place. Expect daytime flaggers there, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., while crews move utility poles.
- I-75 at Hamilton Place: The ongoing interchange job still has reduced speeds, traffic shifts and nightly lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
What it means for you: If you shop, work or see the doctor around Hamilton Place or East Brainerd, mark next weekend on the calendar now and follow the signed detour. It’s the same thing we do when the creek’s up on the low road: take the high road around and get there just fine.

ποΈ Over the Mountain: Grundy County and I-24 Night Work

For folks who head west over the plateau, TDOT lists crack sealing on I-24 in Grundy County between mile markers 126.98 and 129.41, with lane closures on the night shift, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. In Grundy County, SR-50 gets daily flagging for resurfacing from Hideaway Cabin Road to SR-56, and U.S. 41 (SR-2) has daytime flaggers between Bells Cove and West Main Street, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., through Nov. 17.
What it means for you: Daytime trips toward Monteagle, Manchester or Nashville on I-24 shouldn’t notice the crack sealing. If you drive that stretch late at night, ease off and watch for lane closures. Crack sealing is like caulking around the bathtub: a small, quick job that keeps water out and saves a bigger repair down the road.
π¨ Tonight’s Breeze and a Sunny, Chilly Weekend

The National Weather Service forecast for Dunlap calls for gusts up to 25 mph this afternoon as temperatures fall, then a mostly cloudy night with a low around 45 and north wind gusts up to 30 mph. Saturday turns mostly sunny with a high near 60 and gusts up to 25 mph. Lows dip to about 38 Saturday night and 39 Sunday night, with sunny days in the mid-60s Sunday and Monday.
What it means for you: Tonight, watch for limbs on wooded stretches and strap down anything loose in a truck bed or on a trailer. If a tree blocks the road, pull off safely and call 911. On the cold mornings, give the windshield a minute to clear, and watch for low sun glare on east-facing roads.

π Plain-English Roads Glossary

- Resurfacing: Grinding off or covering worn pavement and laying a fresh layer of blacktop on top.
- Cold in-place recycling: A method where machines grind up the old pavement, mix it with binder right on the spot and lay it back down, with no need to haul it away. A fresh top layer usually goes over it.
- Thermoplastic markings: Long-lasting stripes made from a plastic material that’s melted and laid on the road. They’re thicker and brighter than paint.
- Flagger: A worker with a stop/slow paddle who takes turns letting each direction through a one-lane work zone.
- Crack sealing: Filling small cracks in pavement so water can’t get in and cause potholes.
- Bridge inspection: A routine safety check where engineers look over a bridge up close. It’s normal and required, not a sign of trouble.

π Fresh Blacktop, Friendly Flaggers and a Calm Ride Home

Here’s all you need to remember: flaggers on U.S. 127 and our other home highways, daytime work on the Signal Mountain routes starting Monday, a Monday paving stop at the Love’s on SR-27, and an East Brainerd closure next weekend. None of it is cause for worry. It’s just the county getting its roads fixed up before winter, the way we put up firewood in October.
