Or: Skip That East Brainerd Stretch This Weekend, Ease Through the Wet Pavement and Mark Monday’s Closures Before the Buses Roll

Saturday afternoon feels a little like the porch after a hard wash β€” the Flood Watch for Dunlap has lifted, but the boards are still slick and the wind is still tugging at the chairs.

Here’s what’s in this report: the Flood Watch is no longer active for Sequatchie County as of midday Saturday, while a Wind Advisory still runs through Sunday morning with showers and wet pavement; East Brainerd Road (SR-320) is closed right now through Monday 5 a.m. between Prosperity Lane and Vance Road; a new Fuller Road closure starts Monday for water-main work ahead of East Brainerd widening; and Monday brings school buses, the Coffee County SR-127 bridge shutdown and more I-24 night work. Local flaggers on SR-111, SR-399 and SR-8 are still out.

⏱️ What this means for you in 30 seconds

  • Flood Watch: Lifted for Dunlap / Sequatchie as of Saturday midday. Wind Advisory still on through about 7 a.m. Sunday CDT.
  • Wet roads: Showers this afternoon and tonight. Turn around if water covers the pavement.
  • East Brainerd now: SR-320 closed Prosperity Lane to Vance Road from 5 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday for storm drainage and clearing. Signed detour.
  • Monday new: Fuller Road (East Brainerd to White Road) closes 24 hours a day Oct. 12–18. School buses back. SR-127 bridge in Coffee County closes. I-24 westbound entrance at Exit 117 closes Monday night.
  • I-24 Marion nights: Lane work resumes Sunday–Thursday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., roughly mile markers 152–156.

🌧️ Flood Watch Lifted β€” Wind Advisory and Wet Pavement Still Matter

Illustration for 🌧️ Flood Watch Lifted β€” Wind Advisory and Wet Pavement Still Matter

As of Saturday midday, the National Weather Service point forecast for Dunlap lists a Wind Advisory through about 7 a.m. Sunday CDT and no longer shows an active Flood Watch for this spot. Active alerts at the Dunlap coordinates confirm the Wind Advisory only.

That does not mean the roads are suddenly dry. Showers and possible thunderstorms are still in the Saturday afternoon and tonight forecast, with gusty east winds that can make high-profile vehicles feel squirrely. Low spots and dips can hold water after a band of rain even when the watch is gone.

It’s a little like taking the “storm coming” sign out of the window but leaving the mop by the door. The official watch ended. The puddles did not get the memo yet.

What it means for you: Drive slower on wet pavement. Give yourself extra following distance. If water covers the road, turn around β€” never drive through a flooded dip to “see how deep it is.”

🚧 East Brainerd Is Closed Right Now Through Monday Morning

TDOT’s Oct. 8–14 roadway report says the contractor on SR-320 (East Brainerd Road) will close the road from Prosperity Lane to Vance Road from 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, for storm-drainage installation and vegetation clearing as part of the bridge-over-CSX project. A signed detour is in place. Daytime flagging continues other days as utility and construction work moves along.

If your Saturday or Sunday Chattanooga loop normally cuts through that stretch near the railroad bridge, use the posted detour now β€” especially with wet pavement and weekend wind already asking you to keep driving simple.

What it means for you: Build the detour into any weekend trip before you leave the Valley. Check SmartWay or 511 if you’re unsure which way the signs are sending traffic.

πŸ†• Monday New: Fuller Road Closes for a Week

Illustration for πŸ†• Monday New: Fuller Road Closes for a Week

Hamilton County reports that Fuller Road will close between East Brainerd Road and White Road beginning Monday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 18. It is a continuous, 24-hour closure so East Side Utility can relocate a water main ahead of upcoming East Brainerd Road widening.

Residents and emergency services needing access must enter Fuller Road from the west end near Hurricane Creek.

What it means for you: If that short connector is part of your Monday-through-next-weekend Chattanooga pattern, mark the alternate now. This is separate from today’s Prosperity-to-Vance East Brainerd shutdown.

πŸŒ‰ Monday Checklist: Buses, SR-127 Bridge and an I-24 Ramp

Illustration for πŸŒ‰ Monday Checklist: Buses, SR-127 Bridge and an I-24 Ramp

Three Monday items stack on top of each other for Valley drivers:

  • School buses: Sequatchie County Schools return to a regular weekday after the weekend, so leave earlier on familiar routes and watch the yellow lights.
  • SR-127 in Coffee County: The bridge at mile marker 9.76 (Hillsboro Viola Road) closes beginning Monday, Oct. 12, for a full replacement over Bradley Creek. Signed detour through summer 2027. This is not U.S. 127 through downtown Dunlap β€” it matters if your trip uses that Coffee County corridor toward the Tullahoma / Viola side.
  • I-24 Exit 117: The westbound entrance ramp at AEDC Road / Wattendorf Memorial Highway closes from Monday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 19, at 6 a.m. Detour uses Exit 114 for westbound access. A 12-foot width restriction remains on all ramps at that interchange.

Also Monday: daytime shoulder closures begin on the P.R. Olgiatti Bridge (U.S. 27) for a routine inspection, weather depending.

What it means for you: Sketch Monday’s route tonight while the house is quiet. One SmartWay check before you leave beats three wrong turns in the rain-slick aftermath.

πŸŒ™ I-24 Nights Resume Sunday β€” Marion County Resurfacing

Illustration for πŸŒ™ I-24 Nights Resume Sunday β€” Marion County Resurfacing

Resurfacing continues on I-24 in Marion County between about mile markers 152.2 and 156 (near SR-27 / U.S. 72 to east of SR-28). Single-lane closures run Sunday through Thursday nights, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Full ramp closures can happen intermittently, but TDOT says at least one ramp stays open in each direction. Tennessee Highway Patrol assists with traffic control.

Saturday daytime on that stretch should look familiar. The night pattern picks back up after dark Sunday.

What it means for you: Daytime trips through Marion County are the easier window. Evening and overnight trips to or from Chattanooga need more buffer through midweek.

🟠 Closer to Home: Flaggers Still Out, Midweek Tunnel Nights Ahead

Illustration for 🟠 Closer to Home: Flaggers Still Out, Midweek Tunnel Nights Ahead

TDOT’s Oct. 8–14 report still lists flagger-controlled single-lane closures for resurfacing on:

  • SR-111 near Lewis Chapel Road to near East Valley Road
  • SR-399 from the Grundy County line toward SR-111 (and continuing in Grundy toward SR-108)
  • SR-8 from south of Whitlow Road to north of Sherman Road

Suck Creek Road (SR-27) continues daytime flagging for utility work into next week. Weather permitting, Chattanooga’s overnight tunnel cleanings remain on the calendar: McCallie and Stringer’s Ridge overnight Oct. 14 (8 p.m.–6 a.m.); Bachmann Tubes overnight Oct. 15.

The East Valley Road bridge at Barker Branch remains closed for replacement, with a December reopen target reported earlier, weather depending.

What it means for you: Leave a few extra minutes on those Valley stretches. Follow the flagger like you’d wait your turn at a four-way stop.

  • Wind Advisory: Sustained winds or gusts strong enough to make driving harder and blow around loose objects. Slow down, especially in trucks and vans.
  • Flood Watch (lifted here): Flooding was possible. It is no longer active for Dunlap as of Saturday midday, but leftover water on roads can still be dangerous.
  • Bridge replacement: Taking out an old bridge and building a new one, which usually means a full road closure and a detour for a while.
  • Ramp closure: An on-ramp or off-ramp is shut so you have to use another exit.
  • Flagger: A worker with a stop/slow paddle who takes turns letting traffic through a one-lane work zone.
  • SmartWay: TDOT’s free live traffic map with cameras and closures, at smartway.tn.gov, or by calling 511.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration for ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Flood Watch still on for Sequatchie County?

As of Saturday midday, no. The Dunlap NWS point forecast and active alerts show a Wind Advisory through Sunday morning, not an active Flood Watch. Wet roads and low spots can still hold water after showers β€” turn around if the pavement is covered.

How long is East Brainerd closed this weekend?

TDOT lists the Prosperity Lane to Vance Road closure from 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, with a signed detour.

What is the Fuller Road closure?

Starting Monday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 18, Fuller Road closes between East Brainerd Road and White Road for a water-main relocation. Access is from the west end near Hurricane Creek.

Does the Coffee County SR-127 bridge closure affect downtown Dunlap?

No. That closure is on SR-127 (Hillsboro Viola Road) in Coffee County, not on U.S. 127 through Dunlap. It mainly matters if your trip uses that Coffee County corridor.

Will I-24 night work slow my daytime commute?

The Marion County lane closures are scheduled 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, so daytime drivers should not see those lane drops.

A wet Saturday and a busy Monday on the map can feel like a lot of orange cones to keep straight. Most of it comes down to three quiet habits: skip the closed East Brainerd stretch this weekend, turn around at water and peek at SmartWay before a night trip to town.

Be safe out there, and look out for the neighbors on the low roads. Read Dunlap.Today for road and weather updates as they come in.
