Or: The Raise Gets Its Number This Morning, the Pump Gives Back Another Few Cents, and Thursday We Check the Medicare Fence

By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Wednesday, October 14, 2026

Some mornings you wake up already knowing what day it is. Christmas morning. The first day of deer season. And for millions of folks on Social Security, today. This is COLA Day, the morning we learn how big next year’s raise will be.

Here’s what’s on the money table this Wednesday: September’s inflation report lands at 7:30 a.m. Central this morning, and Social Security’s official 2027 COLA is expected right behind it, Chattanooga gas slipped again to about $3.77, down about 17 cents in a week, Medicare open enrollment opens tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 15, and runs through Dec. 7, with a simple checklist and free help from TN SHIP, and daily mortgage rates eased a little ahead of today’s inflation report, with Freddie Mac’s weekly number due Thursday.

Most of this is national or statewide news. We’ll say so as we go, then bring it home to the Valley kitchen table.

⏱️ What this means for you in 30 seconds

  • COLA Day (Wed., Oct. 14): Inflation report at 7:30 a.m. Central. The official 2027 COLA follows on SSA.gov/cola. Forecasts: about 3.5%–3.6%. It shows up in January 2027 checks. Nothing to sign up for.
  • At the pump (Wed., Oct. 14): Chattanooga regular about $3.77 (down about 17 cents in a week), Tennessee about $3.90, national about $4.33. Tennessee diesel is about $6.00.
  • Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 15: Medicare open enrollment starts and runs through Dec. 7. Free, unbiased help: TN SHIP, 1-877-801-0044.
  • Paydays: Social Security today for birthdays on the 1st–10th; Oct. 21 for the 11th–20th; Oct. 28 for the 21st–31st. SSI’s November payment comes early on Oct. 30.
  • Rates: Daily 30-year mortgage averages are around 7.3%–7.6%, depending on the survey. Freddie Mac’s weekly number comes Thursday.

As this went to press a little after 7 a.m. Central, the official number was not out yet. Here’s how the morning works. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September’s Consumer Price Index at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, which is 7:30 a.m. Central. Social Security uses one piece of that report, called the CPI-W, to set the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), and the official percentage is expected to post on SSA.gov/cola the same morning. By the time you read this over your second cup, it may already be up.

Until then, everything is a forecast, and the forecasts are close together. CNBC reports that The Senior Citizens League and independent analyst Mary Johnson both expect about 3.5%, and AARP expects about 3.6%. Johnson told CNBC it could land anywhere from about 3.4% to 3.6%. For comparison, the 2026 COLA was 2.8%. Today’s report will also show how grocery prices moved in September.

The raise is automatic. It applies to December benefits, which are paid in January 2027. For SSI, the first 2027 payment comes early, on Dec. 31, 2026, because Jan. 1 is a holiday. Social Security usually mails COLA notices in early December, and you can also see yours in your my Social Security account.

What it means for you: Think of the forecasts like the weatherman’s guess and today’s number like looking out the window. Once the official percentage posts, write it on your fridge calendar and use that number, not a forecast or a social media post, to plan your 2027 budget. Remember the Part B premium usually comes out of the same check, and that number comes later this fall.

β›½ Wednesday Pump Check: Chattanooga Down to About $3.77

Illustration for β›½ Wednesday Pump Check: Chattanooga Down to About $3.77

AAA’s Wednesday, Oct. 14, reading puts Chattanooga (TN only) regular at about $3.77 a gallon, down from about $3.80 yesterday and about $3.94 a week ago. That’s roughly 17 cents in seven days. Cleveland is about $3.82. Statewide, Tennessee’s average is about $3.90, down from about $3.92 yesterday and $3.98 a week ago. The national average is about $4.33.

Diesel eased a bit too: about $6.00 statewide and $5.79 in Chattanooga, down about 4 cents from yesterday. Prices are still well above a year ago, when Tennessee regular averaged about $2.72. AAA says this is the first October the national average has been above $4.

What it means for you: The pump keeps easing a little at a time, like letting the air out of a tire one slow hiss at a time. If you’re already headed to Chattanooga, Jasper or Cleveland this week, that’s a fine time to fill up. Dunlap stations can run a little different, so check your gas app before you pull in.

🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment Opens Tomorrow: Your Front-Porch Checklist

Illustration for 🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment Opens Tomorrow: Your Front-Porch Checklist

Starting tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 15, and running through Monday, Dec. 7, anyone with Medicare can review and change their health or drug plan for 2027. Changes take effect Jan. 1. If you’re happy with your plan and nothing changed, you don’t have to do anything. It renews on its own.

A few 2027 numbers worth knowing (these are national): Medicare says no drug plan can have a deductible above $700 in 2027 (up from $615), and once your out-of-pocket drug costs reach $2,400 (up from $2,100), you pay nothing more for covered drugs the rest of the year. Medicare also says negotiated prices for 15 more drugs take effect Jan. 1, 2027. The official 2027 Part B premium isn’t out yet. CMS usually announces it in November.

A simple checklist before you call or click:

  • Find your plan’s Annual Notice of Change letter (it should have come by the end of September).
  • Write down every prescription, the dose and how often you take it.
  • List your doctors, your hospital and your pharmacy, and confirm they’re still in the plan’s network for 2027.
  • Compare total yearly cost, not just the monthly premium: deductibles, copays and drug costs add up.
  • Call TN SHIP at 1-877-801-0044 for free, unbiased help, or compare plans at Medicare.gov.

What it means for you: Think of it like checking the garden fence before winter. Most years it’s fine, but it only takes one loose board to let the deer in. One quick review can catch a dropped drug or a doctor who left the network. One quick reminder: the one-time $90 Part B rebate is still on its way to some people in Original Medicare by paper check, and Social Security starts taking payment-status calls tomorrow at 1-800-772-1213.

🏠 Mortgage Rates Eased a Little Before Today’s Report

Illustration for 🏠 Mortgage Rates Eased a Little Before Today's Report

Daily lender numbers dipped Tuesday. Zillow’s average 30-year fixed rate was about 7.32%, down 12 basis points from Monday, and the 15-year was about 6.59%, according to Yahoo Finance. Other surveys run a bit higher, from about 7.4% to 7.6%, so the exact number depends on who’s counting. Freddie Mac’s last weekly average was 7.40% (Oct. 8), and its next reading comes Thursday, Oct. 15. Today’s inflation report can nudge rates either way.

What it means for you: Rates are still above 7%, so don’t wait on a big drop to make a plan. If you’re shopping for a home or vehicle loan, get two or three quotes, including a local credit union. And if you have savings sitting idle, ask what a savings account or CD pays. Higher rates help the saver’s side of the ledger.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 2027 COLA?

Social Security posts the official percentage at SSA.gov/cola after the 7:30 a.m. Central inflation report on Oct. 14. Forecasts ranged from about 3.4% to 3.6%, but use the official number once it’s posted.

When will I see the COLA in my check?

In your January 2027 payment. SSI recipients get their first 2027 payment early, on Dec. 31, 2026.

Do I need to apply for the COLA?

No. It’s automatic. Anyone who calls or texts asking for money or your Social Security number to “unlock” a raise is running a scam. Hang up.

Do I have to change my Medicare plan during open enrollment?

No. If your plan still covers your drugs and doctors at a cost you’re comfortable with, it renews on its own. Open enrollment is a chance to check, not a requirement to switch.

What’s the deadline for Medicare changes?

Dec. 7. Your plan has to get your enrollment by then, and new coverage starts Jan. 1, 2027.

Is TN SHIP really free?

Yes. TN SHIP counselors give free, unbiased Medicare help and don’t sell plans. Call 1-877-801-0044.

Are gas prices in Dunlap the same as Chattanooga?

Not exactly. AAA’s $3.77 is a Chattanooga-area average. Prices at Dunlap stations can be a little higher or lower, so check your gas app before you fill up.

Big news days can feel like a lot, but today only asks one thing of you: write down the official COLA once it posts. Fill up when you’re already out, pull out that Medicare letter before tomorrow, and take open enrollment one step at a time. You’ve got until Dec. 7, which is plenty of time to do it right. Slow and steady gets the hay in the barn.
