💔 Roberts Family Diner Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Staff Member Shannon Lafferty
The Sparta dining community is grieving the loss of Shannon Lafferty, a longtime member of the Roberts Family Diner team, whose sudden passing this week has reminded the close-knit restaurant family of life’s fragility and the bonds formed through shared work and daily connection.
Lafferty suffered a stroke on Friday afternoon while working at the diner and was airlifted to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville for emergency care. He was removed from life support on Saturday, according to a statement from the diner’s ownership posted to the restaurant’s social media.
π€ A Surrogate Family Built Over Years
In an emotional tribute, the diner’s owner described the profound nature of workplace relationships, noting that the restaurant staff had become a “surrogate family” to one another-often seeing each other more frequently than their own blood relatives. The owner reflected on the difficulty of processing the loss, writing that they had attempted to compose the announcement multiple times before finding the words to share the news with the community.
Community members who knew Lafferty remembered him as a gentle and generous person. One commenter described him as “a gentle giant” who was “soft spoken, kind and would give you the shirt off his back,” recalling his familiar presence during slower shifts at the diner.
π Community Support and Donations
Roberts Family Diner is accepting donations from community members who wish to contribute toward Lafferty’s funeral arrangements. Donations can be made directly at the diner, located at 4424 Old Kentucky Rd in Sparta.
The diner’s call for prayers and remembrance reflects the role that local gathering places play in the fabric of small-town life-spaces where regular customers and staff become extended family, and where loss is felt collectively by all who pass through the door.

Shannon was a gentle giant with a soft spoken voice who loved his job and loved his Fur babies as well. He was a treasure to work with and always quick witted with his jokes . He would give you his last anything and the shirt off his back if you needed it. He will always have a special place in our hearts π
He is my brother by choice. I am a better person for getting to know him and working beside him.
I never had the privilege of meeting him like you did. I’m glad he had such a wonderful impact on so many like you. Thank you for letting me know.
