π§ Hundred-Mile Happenings: Athens Storytelling Festival, Crossville FALL Block Party, Cleveland Halloween Block Party and North Pole Limited

Or: Free Truck-or-Treat at the Towing Museum, Edgar Evins Wood-Round Painting, Cowan’s Craft Show with Santa and Christmas on the Square β Eight New Day Trips Within About 100 Miles of Dunlap
Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number fifteen of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. As always, we lay it out plain: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it. And as always, no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.
This round stretches from porch-story laughter to Christmas train cocoa: Athens, Alabama’s 20th Storytelling Festival, Crossville’s free FALL Block Party craft fair, free Truck-or-Treat at the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame & Museum, Cleveland’s 39th Downtown Halloween Block Party, a free jack-o-lantern wood-round workshop at Edgar Evins, Cowan’s 14th All Seasons Craft Show with Santa, Christmas on the Square with Community Tree Lighting in Cleveland, and TVRM’s classic North Pole Limited from Grand Junction.

π°οΈ The one thing to remember: the time line. Chattanooga / Hamilton County (Towing Museum, Grand Junction / TVRM) and Cleveland / Bradley County are on Eastern Time, one hour ahead of us. So a 4 p.m. Eastern Truck-or-Treat start is 3 p.m. our time, and a 6 p.m. Eastern tree lighting is 5 p.m. our time. Athens, Alabama (Limestone County), Crossville, Cowan and Edgar Evins State Park are on Central Time, same as Dunlap. And remember, clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov. 1 β after that, Eastern is still one hour ahead.
π€ Twenty Years of Stories in Athens, Alabama

Twenty years ago a handful of tellers pulled up chairs and asked a town to listen. This October the Athens Storytelling Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary at Athens State University with four masters of the craft β Donald Davis, Bil Lepp, Josh Goforth and Adam Booth β plus a Thursday-night Olio sampler that includes Carol Cain’s “Rosie the Riveter.” Think of it as Cousin Billy’s front-porch storytelling with a concert tent and a gift-shop swatch for your ticket. Kids 2β12 are free; students get deep discounts. It’s not stand-up comedy β it’s laughter, memory and the kind of tales that stick longer than a biscuit.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Thu., Oct. 22 through Sat., Oct. 24, 2026. Thursday Olio about 7 p.m. (doors/gift shop earlier). Friday and Saturday run roughly 9 a.m.β9:30 p.m. across three sessions each day. Family-friendly Ghost Stories walk Friday night about 9:30 p.m. (included with other tickets, or about $10 alone).
- Where: Athens State University tent by Sandridge Student Center / Brown Hall area, 300 N. Beaty St., Athens, AL 35611.

π All Aboard the North Pole Limited

Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Select dates Nov. 13βDec. 23, 2026. Day and evening departures; times shown in Eastern Time on the booking calendar β check live availability before you go.
- Where: Grand Junction Depot, 4119 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

β Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?
No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. This batch is all new names for article #15.
Is Athens, Alabama really within about 100 miles of Dunlap?
It’s on the edge β roughly 100β110 miles and about two hours depending on traffic. Close enough for a dedicated storytelling Saturday if the lineup calls you; skip it if you only want under-an-hour drives.
Which Oct. 31 outing should we pick?
Morning craft at Edgar Evins, afternoon Truck-or-Treat, evening Cleveland Block Party is the ambitious stack. Most families should pick one candy plan (trucks or Cleveland) and save energy for costumes.
Do we need tickets for the craft shows and block parties?
FALL Block Party, Truck-or-Treat, Cleveland Halloween Block Party, Cowan craft show and Christmas on the Square are free to attend. Storytelling festival and North Pole Limited need purchased tickets. Edgar Evins needs free registration.
Eastern or Central β which clock do I set?
Dunlap / Sequatchie is Central. Chattanooga and Cleveland run Eastern (one hour ahead). Athens AL, Crossville, Cowan and Edgar Evins match us on Central.
How do you pick these events?
We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page whenever we can. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
