💵 Tuesday Money Check: Chattanooga Gas Dips to $3.64, Beef Gets a Little Cheaper, and a $50,000 Shot for Valley Small Businesses Closes Monday

Or: A Cheaper Tank, a Friendlier Meat Counter, the First Propane Price of the Season, a Holiday Number to Write Down, and a Grant Worth an Evening
By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Tuesday is a good day to check the woodpile. Monday’s rush is behind you, the weekend’s still a ways off, and you can take an honest look at what’s stacked up and what you’ll need before the cold sets in.
Here’s what’s on the money table this morning: Chattanooga gas slipped again, to about $3.64, though a fill-up still costs more than it did a year ago; beef prices at the grocery store fell in September to their lowest level in about a year; the government’s first weekly Tennessee propane price of the heating season is in at about $3.22 a gallon; holiday surveys say about half of shoppers are worried about paying for gifts, so we’ll pick a number now instead of in December; small businesses in Sequatchie County have until Monday, Oct. 26, to apply for a Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union grant of up to $50,000; the library’s free “Let’s Talk Medicare” session is this morning at 10; and a quick look at interest rates. Plus money dates for the fridge.
The grant and the library talk are right here in the Valley. Gas is Chattanooga-area and statewide. Propane is a Tennessee average. Beef, holiday spending and interest rates are national. We’ll say which is which as we go.
β±οΈ What this means for you in 30 seconds
- At the pump (Tue., Oct. 20): Chattanooga regular about $3.64, Tennessee about $3.83, national about $4.28. Down about 16 cents in a week in Chattanooga.
- Meat counter: Fresh beef averaged $9.47 a pound nationally in September, the lowest since October 2025. Ground chuck fell 4.3% in a month.
- Propane: Tennessee’s first weekly reading of the season is about $3.22 a gallon before taxes, about 19 cents higher than a year ago.
- Holiday gifts: Pick a cash number now. The average credit card charges about 19.67% interest.
- Valley small businesses: Idea Leap grant applications close Monday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m. Central. Top prize: $50,000.
- Medicare: Free “Let’s Talk Medicare” at the Sequatchie County Public Library, 10 a.m. today. Open enrollment ends Dec. 7.
- Payday: Social Security for birthdays on the 11thβ20th lands tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 21.
β½ Tuesday Pump Check: Chattanooga Down to About $3.64

AAA’s Tuesday, Oct. 20, reading puts Chattanooga (TN only) regular at about $3.64 a gallon, down about 2 cents from Monday, about 16 cents from a week ago and about 42 cents from a month ago. Cleveland is about $3.70. Statewide, Tennessee averages about $3.83, down about 9 cents in a week, and the national average is about $4.28. Diesel is about $5.72 in Chattanooga and $5.98 statewide, about where it was yesterday.
AAA’s weekly Tennessee report on Monday said the state is now the fifth least expensive gas market in the country. Still, gas is about $1.14 a gallon higher than a year ago statewide. AAA figures the average Tennessee driver pays nearly $58 to fill up, compared with around $40 this time last year. AAA spokeswoman Megan Cooper said “a lot will depend on what happens with oil prices in the weeks ahead,” so nobody’s promising the slide keeps going.
What it means for you: The trend has been friendly for about a month now, and every week it holds is a few more dollars back in the cup holder. At today’s Chattanooga average, a 15-gallon fill-up runs about $54.60. Keep doing what’s been working: glance at a gas app before you fill, and stop at the cheaper station that’s already on your way. If you drive diesel, budget a little higher, since diesel hasn’t come down the way gasoline has.

π₯© The Meat Counter Got a Little Friendlier: Beef Prices Fell in September

University of Tennessee livestock marketing specialist Andrew Griffith reported Friday that the national average retail price of all fresh beef was $9.47 a pound in September, down 20 cents from August and the lowest since October 2025. Choice beef averaged $9.94 a pound, down 29 cents and the lowest since January. Ground beef was lower across the board: ground chuck fell 4.3% from August, and lean ground beef was down 1.3%. These are national grocery prices.
Nashville’s WKRN talked with a Middle Tennessee cattle family who said that doesn’t mean farmers are getting rich. Fuel, feed, hauling, processing and packaging all cost more, and the family said they’re actually making less than a year or two ago. Griffith also wrote that cattle prices have gotten harder to predict, so a September dip isn’t a promise for November.
What it means for you: If hamburger or a roast is on sale this week, it’s a fine time to buy an extra pack and put it in the freezer. Think of it like canning tomatoes in August: you buy when it’s good, and you eat well later. And if you’d rather buy beef straight from a Valley farm, ask about a quarter or half. It’s a bigger check up front, but it fills the freezer and keeps the money close to home.

π₯ Propane Season’s First Price Tag: About $3.22 a Gallon in Tennessee

The U.S. Energy Information Administration only tracks weekly home heating prices from October through March, and the new season’s numbers are in. For the week of Oct. 12, Tennessee’s average residential propane price was about $3.22 a gallon, before taxes. That’s up about 3 cents from the week before and about 19 cents from a year ago. The national average was about $2.64. This is a statewide average; your own dealer’s price may be higher or lower. The next weekly update comes Wednesday afternoon.
What it means for you: If there’s a propane tank in your yard, a 100-gallon fill at that average works out to about $322 before taxes, roughly $19 more than last year. Not a shock, but worth planning for. This week, go read the gauge on your tank. If it’s getting low, call your dealer and ask about a budget plan that spreads the cost across the winter. If paying for heat is a worry, SETHRA in Dunlap handles heating help for Sequatchie County at 423-949-2191. Reading the gauge in October is like checking the hay in the barn before the first frost: it’s a lot easier than finding out in January.

π About Nine Weeks to Christmas: Pick Your Gift Number Before the Card Comes Out

Two new holiday surveys say shoppers are planning carefully this year. A survey by ICSC, a shopping-center industry group, found 49% of shoppers are worried about affording holiday gifts, and half said personal or household debt will weigh on their budgets. Almost half (49%) expect to borrow for things they can’t pay for in full. Market research firm Circana found shoppers plan to spend about $779 on average, a little less than last year’s $796. 74% plan to save money with sales, store brands and cutting back, and more than half plan to start shopping before Thanksgiving. These are national surveys.
Meanwhile, Bankrate’s weekly survey puts the average credit card interest rate at 19.67%. On a $1,000 balance, that’s about $16 a month in interest if you don’t pay it off.
What it means for you: Sit down with a cup of coffee and write one number on paper: the total you’re comfortable spending on gifts this year, in cash you have or will have by Christmas. Then list the names and divide it up. Folks who start early can catch sales without the December crunch. And remember, a card paid off in full each month charges no interest. It’s like setting the table before company comes: decide how many plates you need first, and the rest of the evening goes smoother.

πΌ Run a Small Business in Sequatchie County? A $50,000 Grant Closes Monday

Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union is taking applications for its 10th Idea Leap Grant Competition, which will give $300,000 to 15 local small businesses. Sequatchie County is in the competition’s Chattanooga Region, along with Bledsoe, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion and Rhea counties. Each region awards a $50,000 first-place grant, a $20,000 second-place grant and three $10,000 runner-up grants. Grants don’t have to be paid back.
To qualify, a business must have been operating and making money for at least 12 months, have 2 to 25 employees, bring in less than $2.5 million a year and be a for-profit business (nonprofits aren’t eligible). Applications close Monday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. Eastern, which is 4 p.m. our time. Winners are picked in stages over the winter, with pitch nights in May.
What it means for you: If you own a shop, a repair business, a farm stand or a food truck that fits those rules, an evening at the kitchen table could be worth it. In TVFCU’s announcement, a 2025 winner said the grant helped them triple their employees and buy three pieces of equipment. Read the official rules first, and send questions to Idea.Leap@tvfcu.com. Know someone who’d qualify? Pass this along. It’s like a good fishing spot: no use keeping it to yourself if your neighbor’s got a pole.

π©Ί Medicare: A Free Talk at the Library This Morning, and Seven Weeks Left to Compare

The Sequatchie County Public Library, 227 Cherry Street in Dunlap, hosts a free “Let’s Talk Medicare” session today at 10 a.m. It covers Medicare basics and changes coming in 2027. Sign-up isn’t required, but the library says calling ahead at (423) 949-2357 helps them plan. The presenter is Wendy Barrett, a licensed insurance agent. The library says it’s an educational session, not a sales event, and that it doesn’t endorse any insurance company.
Medicare open enrollment runs through Monday, Dec. 7, about seven weeks from today. The official 2027 Part B premium still hadn’t been announced as of this morning; the trustees’ estimate is about $209.50 a month. Social Security says you’ll be able to see your own 2027 Medicare premium amount online in late November.
What it means for you: A general talk is a fine way to get your bearings. For one-on-one help that doesn’t come from anyone selling a plan, call TN SHIP, Tennessee’s free Medicare counseling program, at 1-877-801-0044. Bring your list of prescriptions either way. There’s no prize for finishing early, but there’s plenty of comfort in not waiting until the first week of December.

π¦ Interest Rates in One Minute: Loans Ticked Up, Savings Averages Stayed Low

Zillow’s lender data this morning has the average 30-year fixed mortgage at 7.25%, up about a tenth of a point from Monday, and the 15-year at 6.70%. On the savings side, the FDIC’s monthly numbers, posted Monday, show the national average savings account paying just 0.38%, the average money market account 0.63%, and the average 12-month CD 1.76%. Those averages include lots of big banks that pay very little. These are all national figures.
What it means for you: If you have a fixed-rate mortgage, nothing changes. If you have savings sitting in an account paying next to nothing, ask your bank or credit union what it pays on a CD or money market account, and make sure it’s FDIC- or NCUA-insured. Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage numbers come Thursday, and the Federal Reserve announces its next rate decision Wednesday, Oct. 28.

β Frequently Asked Questions

Is the $3.64 gas price what I’ll pay in Dunlap?
Not exactly. It’s AAA’s average for the Chattanooga (TN only) area. Dunlap stations can run a little higher or lower, so check your gas app before you fill up.
Will beef keep getting cheaper?
Nobody can promise that. UT’s Andrew Griffith wrote that cattle prices have become harder to predict, so treat September’s drop as a nice break, not a trend you can count on.
Why is my propane dealer’s price different from $3.22?
The $3.22 is a statewide average before taxes. Your price depends on your dealer, how much you buy, your contract and local taxes. Ask your dealer for a written quote.
What if I’ve already used the credit card for gifts?
That’s all right. Write down what you’ve spent so far, subtract it from your gift number and stop at the limit. Paying the balance off in full when the bill comes means no interest.
Who can apply for the Idea Leap grant?
For-profit businesses in TVFCU’s 17-county service area, including Sequatchie County, that have been operating and making money for at least 12 months, have 2 to 25 employees and bring in less than $2.5 million a year. Check the official rules at tvfcu.com/idealeap for the full list, or email Idea.Leap@tvfcu.com.
Is the library Medicare talk a sales pitch?
The library says it’s educational, not a sales event, and it doesn’t endorse any insurance company. The presenter is a licensed insurance agent. For free one-on-one help from someone who isn’t selling plans, call TN SHIP at 1-877-801-0044.
Does the Fed meeting change my mortgage payment?
Not if you have a fixed-rate mortgage. Your payment stays the same. The Fed’s decision mostly affects credit cards, savings rates and new loans.

πΏ Keep Learning, Keep Calm

This week’s money news is mostly the steady kind: gas is still easing, beef got a little cheaper, propane is up a bit but nothing a budget plan can’t handle, and there’s time to set a holiday number before the season sets one for you. For our small businesses, there’s a real shot at a grant, and for our Medicare folks, there’s a free talk just down the street. None of it calls for worry. A pencil, a cup of coffee and a few quiet minutes will cover most of it.
For more calm, practical Valley news, read Dunlap.Today, and share this with a neighbor who could use a heads-up about that grant deadline.
