Or: Five Giant Steps at the Bus Stop, 6 p.m. Our Time in Chattanooga, and a Plain-English Look at Marion County’s Agenda

By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Monday, October 19, 2026

Good morning. It’s Monday, the coffee’s hot, and the bus is rolling again for a full five-day week.

Fittingly, today is the first day of National School Bus Safety Week. So we’ll start at the end of the driveway and work our way down the week from there.

Here’s what’s ahead: School Bus Safety Week runs Oct. 19–23 under the theme “Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes.” The Lady Indians (14-2-1) play CSLA in a TSSAA region semifinal tomorrow, Tuesday, at 6 p.m. our time. Our neighbors’ Marion County school board meets Thursday at 5 p.m. with a new teacher agreement and a five-year bus contract on its agenda. The Indians visit Walker Valley Friday at 6 p.m. our time. Seniors are in the last week of the ACT Event 2 online window, and TN Promise is due Nov. 2. And the sky? Sunny every day.

⏱️ What this means for you in 30 seconds

  • Bus stop: Be there 5 minutes early and wait 10 feet back (five giant steps). Never walk behind the bus.
  • Driving: Yellow flashing lights mean slow down. Red lights and the stop arm mean stop and wait.
  • Tuesday soccer: Lady Indians at CSLA, region semifinal, 7 p.m. Eastern = 6 p.m. Central.
  • Thursday: Marion County Board of Education, 5 p.m., Central Office in Jasper.
  • Friday football: Indians at Walker Valley, 6 p.m. our time.
  • Seniors: ACT Event 2 online ends Fri., Oct. 23. TN Promise due Nov. 2.
  • Weather: Sunny all week. Highs 71–77, mornings in the 40s.

The National Association for Pupil Transportation holds National School Bus Safety Week every year during the third full week of October. This year it’s Oct. 19–23, and the theme is “Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes.” The featured poster was drawn by a middle school student in Prosper, Texas, who won the national poster contest.

The good news comes first: the federal highway safety agency, NHTSA, says the school bus is one of the safest vehicles on the road. The tricky part is the few minutes getting on and off. NHTSA’s tips for kids are simple:

  • Get to the stop at least 5 minutes early, so nobody has to run.
  • Wait at least 10 feet β€” five giant steps β€” back from the road.
  • Wait until the bus stops, the door opens and the driver says it’s OK. Use the handrail.
  • Never walk behind the bus. To cross, walk five giant steps in front of it and make eye contact with the driver first.
  • Dropped something near the bus? Tell the driver instead of reaching for it.

For grown-ups behind the wheel: yellow flashing lights mean the bus is getting ready to stop, so slow down. Red flashing lights and the stop arm mean children are getting on or off. Stop and wait until the lights go off, the arm folds in and the bus starts moving.

What it means for you: Think of “five giant steps” like the porch rail β€” the line you don’t lean past. Practice it once this week with the little ones, and it sticks. And here at home, the people driving those buses really are everyday heroes. Earlier this fall, Local 3 News reported that Sequatchie County Schools had to shuffle some routes because of a bus driver shortage, and the district has been hiring substitute drivers. A wave and a “thank you” at the stop this week costs nothing. If you know someone who’d make a steady driver, point them to the district office at 423-949-3617.

⚽ TOMORROW: Lady Indians Play CSLA for a Shot at the Region Final

Illustration for ⚽ TOMORROW: Lady Indians Play CSLA for a Shot at the Region Final

As of this morning, nothing has changed on the schedule. MaxPreps still lists the Lady Indians at Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts (CSLA) on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. Eastern. That’s 6 p.m. by Dunlap clocks. It’s a TSSAA Division I Class A region semifinal.

Sequatchie County comes in at 14-2-1 and finished first in the district regular season at 4-0, according to MaxPreps. The TSSAA schedule has the winners playing again in the region finals on Thursday, Oct. 22.

What it means for you: Leave Dunlap by about 5 o’clock to make the drive down the mountain, find parking and settle in. A blanket and a jacket will feel good once the sun goes down β€” Tuesday night’s low is near 44. And if the girls win, keep Thursday evening open.

πŸ›οΈ Thursday: Marion County’s School Board Meets β€” Here’s the Agenda in Plain English

Our neighbors in Jasper have a school board meeting this week. The Marion County Board of Education meets Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. at its Central Office, 204 Betsy Pack Drive in Jasper. Marion County is on Central time, same as us. The posted agenda includes:

  • A teacher agreement (called an MOU) covering 2026 to 2029
  • A school bus contract running from the 2026-27 through the 2030-31 school years
  • A change order for a secure entryway and canopy at Marion County High School, plus a payment on that school’s roofing work
  • A new kitchen heating and cooling unit for Whitwell Elementary
  • A math support specialist contract for South Pittsburg High School and pay for district tutoring leaders
  • Field trips, including South Pittsburg Elementary students to Huntsville on Dec. 7

The meeting also opens with a presentation from a student leadership team and a recognition for school volunteer Martha Krenson.

Two other board notes: Bledsoe County’s school board next meets Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at Rigsby Elementary. And as of this morning, Sequatchie County’s board page still shows only the agenda from the Oct. 12 meeting β€” no minutes or votes posted yet. We’ll share them as soon as they’re up.

What it means for you: Most of a school board agenda is like a household’s monthly bills β€” roofs, copiers, buses and paychecks. It’s not exciting, but it’s how the lights stay on. Marion County families with a question can speak during the public comment time at the start of the meeting.

The Indians (5-3) head to Cleveland to play Walker Valley on Friday, Oct. 23. MaxPreps lists kickoff at 7 p.m., and Cleveland is on Eastern time, so that’s 6 p.m. in Dunlap. The Indians close the regular season at home against Giles County on Friday, Oct. 30.

What it means for you: Same rule as Tuesday β€” the clock in Cleveland runs an hour ahead of the one on your stove. Friday night looks clear with a low near 44, so the stadium blanket can ride along again.

This is the final week of the ACT Event 2 online window (Oct. 19–23) for Tennessee’s free school-day senior retake. Event 3 follows with a paper date on Tue., Oct. 27 and online windows Oct. 27–30 and Nov. 2–6. Each school picks its own day, so the SCHS counseling office has the answer for your senior.

The Tennessee Promise application is due Monday, Nov. 2, through the THEC Student Portal linked at collegefortn.org.

What it means for you: Two weeks goes by like a weekend at Grandma’s. Sit down with your senior one evening this week and get TN Promise done β€” it’s quicker than you’d think, and one less thing on the list.

πŸ’‘ Thursday Is Lights On Afterschool Day

Illustration for 💡 Thursday Is Lights On Afterschool Day

Lights On Afterschool is a national celebration of afterschool programs, held this year on Thursday, Oct. 22. The Afterschool Alliance, which organizes it, says more than 8,000 events are planned across the country, from student art shows to family fun nights.

This is a national event. We haven’t seen a local Lights On event posted by Valley schools, so check with your child’s school if you’re curious.

What it means for you: If your child is in an afterschool program, Thursday is a nice day to tell the folks who run it thank you. If you’ve wondered what’s offered at your school after the bell, it’s a good week to ask.

Today’s high is near 71, then 74 Tuesday, 77 Wednesday and 75 Thursday and Friday. Nights are clear with lows around 44. Just before 6 a.m. our time, the Chattanooga airport read 41 degrees.

What it means for you: It’s a jacket at the bus stop and short sleeves by lunch. Low morning sun can be bright on the windshield, too, so keep the visor handy and watch for kids near bus stops on the way to work.
