By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today · Sunday, October 18, 2026
Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number forty-six of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. Same promise as always: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it, in plain words. And no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.
This round starts this coming weekend and rolls into December. On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23–24, Dayton hosts its first-ever Porchlight Festival, with concerts, an art showcase, a ballet and a bonfire. From Sunday, Oct. 25, through Halloween, eight locally owned Cleveland coffee shops pour $5 featured drinks for the Cleveland Coffee Crawl. On Saturday night, Nov. 7, the Glenn Miller Orchestra brings big-band swing to the Princess Theatre in South Pittsburg, just down the road. Saturday, Nov. 14, is Winchester’s Craft Fair at the Square, with live bluegrass. From Thursday, Nov. 19, Dalton dances its 21st Snow Queen ballet with a live orchestra. The day after Thanksgiving, a park ranger leads a free hike from Barker Camp, right here in Dunlap. Saturday, Nov. 28, Monteagle lights its tree and opens a town-wide Christmas Tree Trail. And through Dec. 11, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s all-day Copperhill Special rides the Hiwassee River Gorge to the Georgia line.
⏱️ Your 30-second trip list
- Fri.–Sat., Oct. 23–24 (Eastern — subtract an hour): Porchlight Festival, Trinity Chapel, Dayton. Pre-registration closed; suggested donation for walk-ins at the door.
- Sun., Oct. 25–Sat., Oct. 31 (Eastern — shop hours vary): Cleveland Coffee Crawl, eight coffee shops around Cleveland. $5 featured drink at each.
- Sat., Nov. 7, 7 p.m. (Central — our time): Glenn Miller Orchestra, Princess Theatre, South Pittsburg. Ticket price not posted on the show page — check before you go.
- Sat., Nov. 14, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. (Central — our time): Craft Fair at the Square, downtown Winchester. Admission not listed — check before you go.
- Thu.–Sun., Nov. 19–22 (Eastern — subtract an hour): The Snow Queen ballet, Dalton High School Theatre, Dalton, Ga. Evening shows 7 p.m.; Saturday family matinee 2 p.m. Prices: check before you go.
- Fri., Nov. 27, 9 a.m.–noon (listing says “EST” — confirm the clock): After Thanksgiving Day Hike, North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Park, Barker Camp Road, Dunlap. Free (donations welcome).
- Sat., Nov. 28 (Central — our time; start time not posted): Christmas Tree Lighting & Carols in the Park, plus the Christmas Tree Trail through Jan. 5, Monteagle.
- Select dates through Fri., Dec. 11, departs 9:30 a.m. Eastern (8:30 our time): Copperhill Special train, Delano. Coach from $80 adults, $50 kids ($90/$60 on fall-premium dates).
🕰️ The one thing to remember: half of these are on Eastern time. Dayton, Cleveland, Dalton, Ga., and Delano are Eastern, one hour ahead of us, so subtract an hour: the Copperhill Special’s 9:30 a.m. departure is 8:30 a.m. OUR time. South Pittsburg, Winchester and Monteagle are Central, same as Dunlap. The Barker Camp hike meets in Dunlap, but the park’s listing says “9 a.m. EST,” so call the park to confirm which clock they mean. And remember: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Set the clocks back an hour Saturday night, Oct. 31. After that, it’s dark by about 5 p.m., so plan evening trips with a driver who’s comfortable at night.
🏮 Hear Songs, See a Ballet and Sit by a Bonfire at Dayton’s First Porchlight Festival

Picture a front-porch song swap that grew up into a two-day festival. Porchlight is a nationwide network of house concerts and art gatherings run by Renew the Arts, a faith-based arts nonprofit, and this year it’s holding its first festival right up the road in Dayton. Friday night is the Porchlight Expo concert. Saturday packs in a visual art showcase in the morning, a performance by Ballet 5:8 at 11 a.m., a songwriter circle in the afternoon, a final concert at 7 p.m., and a community bonfire at 10 p.m.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Fri., Oct. 23 (check-in from 4 p.m.; doors 6:30, concert 7 p.m.) and Sat., Oct. 24 (art showcase 9 a.m., ballet 11 a.m., songwriter circle 3 p.m., final concert 7 p.m., bonfire 10 p.m.). Eastern Time — subtract an hour.
- Where: Trinity Chapel & Events, 240 1st Ave., Dayton, TN 37321.
- How far: About 40–50 miles, roughly 1 hour, by way of Pikeville and Tenn. 30, or Soddy-Daisy and U.S. 27. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Pre-registration is closed, but walk-ins are welcome with a suggested donation at the door, per the festival page. “Pay what you can,” in other words.
- Who’ll love it: Folks who like gentle acoustic music and songwriters, young dancers who’d love to see a professional ballet up close, and anybody who enjoys a bonfire on a fall night.
- Good to know: Eastern Time — subtract an hour. The Saturday ballet at 11 a.m. Eastern is 10 a.m. our time. MainStreet Dayton supports the festival but doesn’t run it; questions go to porchlight@renewthearts.org.

🎺 Swing to “Chattanooga Choo Choo” With the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Princess Theatre

If your mama or granddaddy danced to “In the Mood” and “Moonlight Serenade,” this is the night to take them out. The world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, an 18-member ensemble, still plays many of Miller’s original arrangements from the 1930s and ’40s, and its songbook includes a tune we all know around here: “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” Best of all, it’s playing the historic Princess Theatre in South Pittsburg, about as close to home as a big-name show gets.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Sat., Nov. 7, 2026, 7 p.m. Central — our time.
- Where: The Princess Theatre, 215 S. Cedar Ave., South Pittsburg, TN 37380.
- How far: About 35 miles, roughly 40–45 minutes, by way of Jasper. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Ticket prices aren’t shown on the theater’s show page — check before you go. Tickets have been on sale since February, so seats may be limited.
- Who’ll love it: Big-band fans, veterans and their families (Miller famously entertained the troops in World War II), and grandkids who’ve never heard a full horn section live.
- Good to know: Central Time — same as us. It’s the first Saturday after the clocks fall back, so it’ll be dark for the drive home; bring a co-pilot.

🪕 Shop Handmade Gifts to Live Bluegrass at Winchester’s Craft Fair at the Square

Winchester’s courthouse square is one of the prettiest in Middle Tennessee, and for one Saturday it fills up with handcrafted holiday gifts, food trucks and live bluegrass music. The listing names the host as WFUMC Craft Fair at the Square. It’s a relaxed, toe-tapping way to start your Christmas list.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Sat., Nov. 14, 2026, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Central — our time.
- Where: Downtown square, 100 S. Jefferson St., Winchester, TN 37398.
- How far: About 60–65 miles, roughly 1¼ hours, by way of Jasper, I-24 to Monteagle, then through Sewanee and Cowan on U.S. 41A. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Admission isn’t listed — check before you go. Bring cash for vendors and food trucks.
- Who’ll love it: Craft-fair regulars, bluegrass fans and anybody who wants to knock out a few Christmas gifts.
- Good to know: Central Time — same as us. We found this one on a community event listing, not a city or tourism page, so confirm before you load up the car. The drive over the mountain through Sewanee is pretty this time of year.

❄️ Watch The Snow Queen Ballet, With a Live Orchestra, in Dalton

For 21 years, Dalton has staged its own winter ballet. The Snow Queen is an original, full-length ballet by the Creative Arts Guild Dance Department and Ballet Dalton, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about how love can melt even the coldest heart. It’s danced to a live chamber orchestra, which is rare for a hometown show. The Saturday 2 p.m. matinee is billed as perfect for families and younger audiences, with narration by the Dalton High School Players.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Thu., Nov. 19, and Fri., Nov. 20, 7 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 21, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Explore Georgia also lists a Sun., Nov. 22, 2 p.m. show, but the Guild’s own announcement mentions only Thursday through Saturday, so check before you go. Eastern Time — subtract an hour.
- Where: Dalton High School Theatre, 1500 Manly St., Dalton, GA 30720.
- How far: About 75–80 miles, roughly 1½ hours, by way of Chattanooga and I-75 south. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Prices weren’t confirmed on a page we could read — check with the Creative Arts Guild before you go. Tickets went on sale in October.
- Who’ll love it: Little dancers, grandmas who love The Nutcracker and want something different, and anybody who’s never heard a live orchestra play for a ballet.
- Good to know: Eastern Time — subtract an hour: the 2 p.m. matinee is 1 p.m. our time. The 7 p.m. shows end after dark, so the matinee is the easy pick for a day trip.

🥾 Walk Off the Turkey on the Cumberland Trail From Barker Camp, Right Here in Dunlap

No long drive for this one. North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Park is hosting an After Thanksgiving Day Hike with a park ranger, leaving from Barker Camp Road in Dunlap. Expect about 5 miles at a moderate level on the Cumberland Trail, with the ranger pointing out plants, wildlife and the history of the area. Leashed dogs are welcome.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Fri., Nov. 27, 2026, 9 a.m.–noon. The listing says the hike begins at “9:00am EST.” Barker Camp is in Dunlap, on our Central time, so if they mean Eastern, that’s 8 a.m. our time. Call the park at (423) 668-7701 to confirm.
- Where: Meet at 3771 Barker Camp Road, Dunlap, TN 37377.
- How far: In our own backyard, up on Walden Ridge. Check your map app for the drive from your house.
- Cost: Free. Register on the state parks page; optional donations of $5, $10 or $20 help the park.
- Who’ll love it: Families home for the holiday, teens with energy to burn, and anyone who’d rather spend Black Friday in the woods than in a checkout line.
- Good to know: Bring water, real hiking shoes and layers; late-November mornings on the ridge can be cold. Five miles is a real walk, so this one’s best for folks who are steady on their feet.

🚂 Ride the All-Day Copperhill Special Through the Hiwassee Gorge to the Georgia Line

This is the long version of a mountain train ride. The Copperhill Special leaves Delano and rolls 94 miles round trip through the Hiwassee River Gorge, crossing the famous Hiwassee Loop, where the track spirals and passes over itself. Then you get a 90-minute layover in the twin towns of Copperhill, Tenn., and McCaysville, Ga., time for lunch, shopping and a walk across the state-line bridge, before the ride back. Conductors narrate the railroad’s history along the way.
Why it’s worth the drive:
- When: Select dates through Fri., Dec. 11, 2026. Departs 9:30 a.m. Eastern (8:30 a.m. our time); back around 5:30 p.m. Eastern (4:30 our time). Arrive 30 minutes early. Operating dates are on the museum’s booking calendar — check before you go.
- Where: TVRM Delano station, 9406 Highway 411, Delano, TN 37325 (not the Chattanooga depot). Free parking. Phone (423) 894-8028.
- How far: About 100 miles, roughly 2 hours, by way of Chattanooga, I-75 and Cleveland. That’s right at our 100-mile line. Approximate; check your map app.
- Cost: Standard coach starts at $80 adults (13+) and $50 children (2–12); $90/$60 on fall-premium dates through November. Premium cars cost more. No senior discount on this trip, and tickets are non-refundable unless you buy trip protection (15% extra) when you book. Lunch is on your own.
- Who’ll love it: Train lovers, leaf-lookers, and anybody who wants a full, unhurried day where somebody else does the driving.
- Good to know: Eastern Time — subtract an hour. To make an 8:30 a.m. (our time) departure, plan to leave Dunlap around 6 a.m. The old railcars have steps; call ahead about mobility needs. Families with little ones may prefer the shorter Hiwassee Loop ride (featured in an earlier list).

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?
No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. All eight are new for article #46. We’ve featured other events at some of the same places, like Dayton’s PumpkinFest and Holiday Stroll, Cleveland’s Halloween block party, an earlier night hike from Barker Camp and the museum’s Hiwassee Loop and Santa trains, but these are separate events.
Which ones are free?
The After Thanksgiving Day Hike is free (donations welcome). Porchlight asks walk-ins for a suggested donation. The Coffee Crawl costs only what you drink, $5 a featured drink. Winchester’s craft fair and Monteagle’s tree lighting don’t list an admission charge, so check before you go. The Copperhill Special starts at $80 for adults. Glenn Miller and Snow Queen ticket prices weren’t posted on pages we could confirm.
Which ones are best for young kids?
The Snow Queen’s Saturday matinee (billed for families and younger audiences), Monteagle’s tree lighting and carols, and the craft fair in Winchester. The Copperhill Special is a long, 8–9-hour day, so it’s better for older kids.
Which ones are easiest if I don’t walk far?
The Glenn Miller concert and The Snow Queen are sit-down shows. The Coffee Crawl lets you drive shop to shop. On the Copperhill Special you ride most of the day, but the old railcars have steps, so call ahead. The Barker Camp hike is about 5 miles and isn’t the one for tired knees.
Eastern or Central: which clock do I set?
Dunlap and Sequatchie County are on Central. South Pittsburg, Winchester and Monteagle are Central too. Dayton, Cleveland, Dalton, Ga., and Delano are Eastern, one hour ahead — subtract an hour. The Barker Camp hike is in Dunlap, but its listing says “EST,” so call the park to be sure.
How do you pick these events?
We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page or a trusted listing whenever we can. When a detail isn’t posted, we say so. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
