Or: Paws & Pumpkins, DΓa de los Muertos, Mayfield Farm Mazes and a Thanksgiving Market β€” Eight New Day Trips Within About 100 Miles of Dunlap

By Thomas Seest, Dunlap.Today Β· Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Howdy, neighbor. Here’s batch number twenty-three of Hundred-Mile Happenings, our running list of unusual, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap. Same promise as always: when, where, how far, what it costs and who’ll love it, in plain words. And no repeats. Every one of these is new to the list.

This round leans hard into late October: Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s Rails, Wizards & Spells (last trains through Oct. 25), the Aquarium’s Aquascarium trick-or-treat night, Ringgold’s Paws & Pumpkins, Dalton’s free DΓa de los Muertos, Crossville’s Boo on Main, early Christmas shopping at the Colonnade in Ringgold, Athens’ big Mayfield Farm Park fall festival through Nov. 8, and Chattanooga Market’s free Thanksgiving Market Nov. 21–22.

⏱️ Your 30-second trip list

  • Weekends through Sun., Oct. 25, Eastern: Rails, Wizards & Spells, TVRM Grand Junction, Chattanooga. $35 ages 2+; plan about 2.5 hours.
  • Fri., Oct. 30, 4–8 p.m. Eastern: Aquascarium, Tennessee Aquarium. Advance tickets; often sells out ($10 members / $45 general).
  • Fri., Oct. 30, 3–7 p.m. Eastern: Paws & Pumpkins, Willow Tree Farms, Ringgold. $5 per vehicle; advance tickets only.
  • Fri., Oct. 30, 6–10 p.m. Eastern: DΓa de los Muertos Celebration, Creative Arts Guild, Dalton. Free; use shuttle parking.
  • Sat., Oct. 31, 4–7 p.m. Central: Boo on Main, downtown Crossville. Community trick-or-treat on Main Street.
  • Sat.–Sun., Oct. 31–Nov. 1, Eastern: Christmas at the Colonnade, Ringgold. $10 admission; ages 10 and under free.
  • Through Sun., Nov. 8, Central: Mayfield Farm Park Fall Festival, Athens, Tenn. Online tickets from about $16.95; ages 2 and under free.
  • Sat.–Sun., Nov. 21–22, Eastern: Thanksgiving Market, First Horizon Pavilion, Chattanooga. Free admission.

πŸ•°οΈ The one thing to remember: most of this batch is on Eastern Time β€” and Friday, Oct. 30, is crowded. Chattanooga, Ringgold and Dalton are on Eastern Time, one hour ahead of Dunlap. Crossville and Athens (Mayfield) are on Central Time, same as us. Also: Friday, Oct. 30, stacks Aquascarium, Paws & Pumpkins and DΓa de los Muertos β€” pick one evening outing, not three, unless you’re splitting the crew.

πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ A Wizard Village, a Potion and a Real Train Ride

Illustration for πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ A Wizard Village, a Potion and a Real Train Ride

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s Rails, Wizards & Spells is the Hogwarts-adjacent day trip Cousin Billy keeps asking about. You walk an Enchanted Forest path into Wizards Way Village β€” shops, outdoor games, a gentle hay ride, potion-making β€” then board at Platform 4.501 for a round-trip ride with the visiting professors and a turntable stop at Chamberlain Crossing. Costumes and personal wands are encouraged. Last weekend dates run through Sunday, Oct. 25, so this one’s a “go soon” outing.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Weekends through Sun., Oct. 25, 2026 (remaining dates typically include Oct. 17–18 and Oct. 24–25 β€” confirm your train time when you book). Village hours vary by day; plan about 2.5 hours total. Eastern Time (arrive about an hour earlier than Dunlap clocks say).
  • Where: Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, Grand Junction Depot, 4119 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
  • How far: About 35–40 miles, roughly 45–55 minutes.
  • Cost: $35 per guest ages 2 and older. Seasonal treats and wand shop extras for purchase. Optional Potions & Spells Special-Tea on select dates (from about $60 β€” check before you go).
  • Who’ll love it: Families with elementary-age kids, train fans and anyone who likes a little make-believe without a theme-park price tag.
  • Good to know: Eastern Time. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Rain or shine; parts are outdoors. Children under 12 stay with a parent or guardian. Advance tickets strongly recommended.

The Tennessee Aquarium’s annual Aquascarium is Halloween night done aquarium-style: themed decorations, music, candy stations through both buildings, and costumed SCUBA divers delivering treats and aquatic facts underwater. It’s spooky-lite β€” perfect for Valley kids who want costumes without a haunted house. Tickets sell out most years, so treat this like a concert and buy ahead.

Why it’s worth the drive:

  • When: Fri., Oct. 30, 2026, 4–8 p.m. Eastern (that’s 3–7 p.m. Dunlap time). Check-in from 4 p.m.; last entry about 7 p.m. Eastern.
  • Where: Tennessee Aquarium, 1 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
  • How far: About 35–40 miles, roughly 45–55 minutes.
  • Cost: About $10 for Aquarium Members and $45 general admission (per Pulse reporting). Advance purchase required; no door sales expected.
  • Who’ll love it: Costumed kids, grandparents and families who like candy with a science side dish.
  • Good to know: Eastern Time. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Same Friday as Paws & Pumpkins and DΓa de los Muertos β€” pick one evening plan.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration for ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events already on earlier Hundred-Mile Happenings lists?

No. We keep a covered-events list and skip anything we’ve already featured. All eight are new for article #23. Rails, Wizards & Spells is a different TVRM experience from the already-covered Hiwassee Loop foliage rides and Haints & Haunts; Aquascarium is separate from Oddtober’s Saturday underwater pumpkin carvings; Boo on Main is Crossville’s downtown event, not other Valley trunk-or-treats.

Which outings are best for little kids?

Rails, Wizards & Spells, Aquascarium, Paws & Pumpkins, Boo on Main and Mayfield Farm Park are the easiest family picks. DΓa de los Muertos works for calm evening crowds. Christmas at the Colonnade and the Thanksgiving Market lean shopping with room for strollers.

Which ones are free?

DΓa de los Muertos and the Thanksgiving Market are free to attend. Boo on Main is a community trick-or-treat (treat as free). Christmas at the Colonnade is $10 (kids 10 and under free). Paws & Pumpkins is $5 per vehicle. Wizard train is $35 ages 2+. Aquascarium is about $10 members / $45 general. Mayfield tickets start around $16.95 online.

Eastern or Central β€” which clock do I set?

Dunlap and Sequatchie County are on Central. Chattanooga, Ringgold and Dalton are on Eastern, one hour ahead β€” subtract an hour for our time. Crossville and Athens (Mayfield) match us.

Three events land on Friday, Oct. 30. What should I do?

Pick the one that fits your crew. Aquascarium is the indoor aquarium candy night (book early). Paws & Pumpkins is the farm-and-pet costume pick. DΓa de los Muertos is the free art-and-music evening in Dalton. Trying all three in one night is a recipe for a cranky drive home.

How do you pick these events?

We look for one-of-a-kind, family-friendly outings within about 100 miles of Dunlap, and we check each one against the organizer’s own page whenever we can. We keep a list so we never repeat an event. If you know a hidden gem, tell us at Dunlap.Today.
