Or: One Week to Open Enrollment, a Wednesday COLA Reveal, and a Grocery List That Matches the Prices

Some weeks the money news feels like a grocery cart with a sticky wheel. You can still get where you’re going. You just want a clear aisle map.

Here’s what’s in the cart this week: USDA’s latest grocery forecast says supermarket prices are rising about 2.4% this year, with beef and candy climbing while eggs fall, Medicare open enrollment starts in one week on Oct. 15, Social Security’s 2027 raise gets announced next Wednesday, Oct. 14, Tennessee gas is holding near $3.97 with Chattanooga a bit cheaper, the Fed’s next rate meeting is Oct. 27–28 and free heating help is available through SETHRA right here in Dunlap.

Most of these figures are national or statewide. We’ll say so as we go, then bring each one back to the Valley kitchen table.

⏱️ What this means for you in 30 seconds

  • Groceries: Shop the uneven aisle. Eggs are cheaper than last year. Beef, candy and coffee are the ones to watch.
  • Medicare: Open enrollment runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. You can already compare 2027 plans at Medicare.gov.
  • Social Security: The official 2027 COLA is due Wednesday, Oct. 14. Until then, any percentage you hear is only a forecast.
  • At the pump: Tennessee regular averages about $3.97 today. Chattanooga is about $3.93. Diesel is easing a little.
  • Heating help: Low-income Valley households can apply for LIHEAP energy assistance through SETHRA in Dunlap.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service updated its Food Price Outlook on Sept. 25 using August price data. For all of 2026, it forecasts:

  • Food at home (the grocery store): up about 2.4%
  • All food: up about 2.9%
  • Food away from home (restaurants): up about 3.5%

August itself was calm at the grocery store: food-at-home prices were unchanged from July and only 2.2% higher than August 2025.

The story is uneven by category, which is the useful part for a Valley shopping list:

  • Eggs: forecast to fall about 29.4% for 2026 as flocks recover. They were still 23% cheaper in August than a year earlier, even after a midsummer bump.
  • Beef and veal: forecast to rise about 9.4%. August beef was 5.9% higher than a year ago.
  • Sugar and sweets: forecast up about 6.6%, driven largely by candy. Handy to know before Halloween.
  • Fresh vegetables: forecast up about 5.7%.
  • Coffee and other nonalcoholic drinks: forecast up about 4.2%. Coffee alone was 6.1% higher year over year in August.
  • Pork, poultry and dairy: much flatter, with dairy nearly flat for the year.

What it means for you: Treat the grocery list like a seed catalog. Plant money where prices are friendly and go easy where they’re not. Stretch beef with beans, eggs or chicken. Buy Halloween candy early and stick to a set number. Fresh produce from a local stand or your own garden stretches the budget and keeps dollars in the Valley. Restaurant meals are rising a little faster than groceries, so a home-cooked supper still wins most weeks.

🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment Starts in One Week

Illustration for 🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment Starts in One Week

Mark your calendar: Medicare Open Enrollment runs Wednesday, Oct. 15, through Monday, Dec. 7. Changes you make then take effect Jan. 1, 2027.

Medicare already lets you compare 2027 health and drug plans. You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D drug plan, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. If you do nothing, you usually stay in your current plan, but costs and benefits can still change.

That “Annual Notice of Change” letter from your plan is worth reading at the kitchen table, not tossing with the junk mail. It tells you what will be different next year if you stay put.

What it means for you: Think of open enrollment like checking the oil before a long trip. You don’t have to change anything, but you should look. Write down your prescriptions and preferred doctors, then compare at Medicare.gov/plan-compare or call 1-800-MEDICARE. For free, unbiased help in Tennessee, call TN SHIP at 1-877-801-0044. Nobody from Medicare will call you asking for a Social Security number or a gift card. If someone does, hang up.

πŸ“… Social Security’s 2027 Raise Is Due Next Wednesday

Every fall, the Social Security Administration announces a cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, so benefits keep up with prices. The number is based on third-quarter inflation data.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release September’s Consumer Price Index on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The official 2027 COLA is expected the same day. Until then, any percentage floating around social media or cable news is a forecast, not the final figure.

For context only: AARP has projected about 3.6% and the Senior Citizens League about 3.5%. Last year’s COLA for 2026 was 2.8%. We will report the official number when Social Security posts it.

Higher payments usually start with benefits for December 2026, paid in January 2027. Some SSI and older Social Security payments that would fall on New Year’s Day arrive at the end of December instead.

What it means for you: Circle Oct. 14 on the calendar, then wait for the real number before rewriting the budget. After the announcement, watch your mail or your my Social Security account for your personal notice. Don’t share your Social Security number with anyone who cold-calls claiming they can “unlock” your raise.

β›½ Pump Check: Still Under $4 in Most of Tennessee

Illustration for β›½ Pump Check: Still Under $4 in Most of Tennessee

AAA’s statewide average for regular gasoline on Thursday, Oct. 8, was about $3.97 a gallon, down a penny from Wednesday and almost even with a week ago. The national average was about $4.36.

Closer to home, Chattanooga regular averaged about $3.93. Diesel in Tennessee averaged about $6.00, down from about $6.09 a week ago. Chattanooga diesel was about $5.78.

AAA’s Oct. 5 weekly wrap-up said Tennessee had fallen 10 cents over the prior week to about $3.93 and ranked as the seventh least expensive state market. Prices are still well above this time last year, but they’re no longer at September’s local highs.

What it means for you: A penny here and there is like rain on the windshield. Notice it, don’t panic. Combine errands, keep tires inflated and fill up on a trip you’re already making toward Chattanooga, Pikeville or Jasper. Diesel easing a bit helps farm trucks and anyone hauling for work.

🏦 Interest Rates: Next Fed Meeting Is Oct. 27–28

Illustration for 🏦 Interest Rates: Next Fed Meeting Is Oct. 27–28

On Sept. 16, the Federal Reserve raised its key short-term rate by a quarter point to a target range of 3.75% to 4%. Minutes from that meeting were released Wednesday, Oct. 7. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27–28.

Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey for the week of Oct. 1 put the average 30-year fixed mortgage at 7.28%, up from 7.03% the week before. The 15-year average was 6.60%. Those are national survey averages, not a quote for any one lender.

What it means for you: If you’re not buying a house or refinancing right now, you can treat the Fed meeting like a weather report for next month. Credit cards and some loans can follow the Fed over time. If you are shopping for a mortgage or a car loan, get a couple of local quotes and ask whether any fees can be locked. Nobody needs to rush into a decision because of a headline.

🌑️ Heating Help Is Open at SETHRA in Dunlap

Illustration for 🌑️ Heating Help Is Open at SETHRA in Dunlap

As nights cool off, energy bills rise. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, called LIHEAP, helps qualifying households with electric, natural gas, fuel oil, kerosene, wood and coal. Payment goes straight to the energy supplier.

In Sequatchie County and nearby counties, applications run through the Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency (SETHRA) at 312 Resource Road in Dunlap. SETHRA also offers weatherization help and emergency repairs for eligible elderly or disabled homeowners. Call 423-949-2191 or toll-free 800-852-6155.

What it means for you: Asking for help with a heating bill is like borrowing a cup of sugar from a neighbor. It’s normal, and the program exists for that reason. Bring ID, proof of income and recent utility bills when you apply. Even if you’re not sure you qualify, a phone call costs nothing and can save a lot of worry later.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration for ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to change my Medicare plan every year?

No. Many people keep the same plan. You should still review the Annual Notice of Change, because premiums, deductibles, drug lists and doctor networks can shift even if you stay put.

Is the 3.5% or 3.6% Social Security raise official?

Not yet. Those are forecasts from outside groups. The official 2027 COLA is expected Oct. 14 after September inflation data is released.

Why are eggs cheaper if grocery inflation is still up?

Overall grocery prices are rising slowly, but individual foods move differently. Egg production has been recovering after earlier flock losses, so egg prices are forecast to fall sharply this year even while beef and candy climb.

Where can I get free Medicare help near Dunlap?

Call TN SHIP statewide at 1-877-801-0044, or start at Medicare.gov/plan-compare. Counselors don’t sell insurance.

Who can apply for LIHEAP through SETHRA?

Low-income residents of Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Grundy, Marion, Meigs, McMinn, Rhea and Polk counties may apply. SETHRA can explain income limits and what paperwork to bring.

Will the Fed meeting change my credit card rate tomorrow?

Usually not overnight. Card and loan rates often move later, if at all. Watch your statements and call your lender if something looks off.
