Tennessee Residents Urged to Take Precautions Against Tick Season

As warmer weather arrives in Tennessee, health officials are reminding residents to take extra precautions against ticks, which are prevalent this time of year and can carry serious illnesses.

According to information shared by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Forestry, ticks in the region can transmit diseases including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. The advisory has prompted community leaders to educate residents about prevention strategies and tick identification.

Six common tick species have been identified in Tennessee: the American Dog Tick, Asian Longhorned Tick, Black-Legged Tick (also known as the Deer Tick), Brown Dog Tick, Gulf Coast Tick, and Lone Star Tick. Each species poses potential health risks to humans and pets.

Health experts recommend several practical steps to reduce tick exposure when spending time outdoors. Residents should stick to the center of trails and avoid tall grass and brush whenever possible. Wearing light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks before they attach to skin, and tucking pants into socks provides an additional barrier of protection.

Using insect repellent containing DEET or treating clothing with permethrin can significantly reduce the risk of tick bites. Additionally, a thorough body check after outdoor activities is essential. Showering within a couple of hours of being outside can help wash away ticks before they have an opportunity to bite.

Residents who spend considerable time outdoors are encouraged to remain vigilant and implement these preventive measures to protect themselves and their families during tick season.
